WTF @ Dell?

I had a failed drive in one of our linux servers. Drive was 1 of 6 in RAID 5 (No Hot Spare)

Drive was a Seagate Cheetah 18.2Gb, U320 @ 10K

Replacement drive comes...

Maxtor 36Gb U320 @ 15K

WTF?

he's complaining because he can't use the new drive in the array like the old one was because it's not the same.

It's better but I'd complain because it's not what I needed.

I don't care about the storage difference because only 18.2 will be used but 5 Disks @ 10,000RPM and 1 at 15,000RPM in RAID5 is asking for trouble...

It's a dell replacement part so either the failed drive goes back or this one does. Otherwise we get billed

Send back the failed drive.

He may be able to work with you for an swapout for the drive with proper speed matchups.

I would call dell and tell them you have sensitive proprietary information on the bad disk. They will usually let it slide without making you send back the old one.
