WTF: CVS has dual-layer DVD burners now

I work in the photo department at CVS. We have a computer there that reads the 'one time use' digital cameras and burns the images to CD, so the tech can take them over to the printing station and send them to the paper processor. The customer keeps the CD. It's inefficent, but I can't change that. I noticed today when I came in that the vanilla CD-RW unit had been replaced with a dual-layer DVD burner. WTF. I asked the manager, and he says they're going to be selling one time use video cameras now. Worst. Idea. Ever.

There's nothing on the package now that says you have to return the camera. I doubt there will be on the video cam. The company is banking on the hope that most people will return the cameras promptly so they can reuse them. If you wanted to bankrupt them, you could just buy a bunch of the expensive units and sit on them for a while.

I almost want to swap the DVD+/-R out and put a CD-RW in while nobody's watching. I swear, that unit will never get used. Who the heck wants a one-time-use video camera?

No, but I think people are afraid to bring me their film anyway.

Ohhh - almost forgot about that movie. I'm going to have to pick it up and add it to my collection.

More on subject, I'm sure they'll figure some people won't return the camera and try and lump that into purchasing/processing fees. I'd guess it'd be flash based - there's some camcorders out like that already that save into mpeg4.

I can't imagine it'd cost over $50 for the camera to buy it though - they're going to have to make it hard to reversee-engineer, unlike the digital cameras
