WTF Columbia House...

I joined an account wiht them to build up a nice DVD selection. For the initial discount and their selection, I had to do it (they had movies I couldn't find). I purchased quite a few of them online and fulfilled my "quota". Of course, as their policy, they will start to send you movies at 22.95 a pop automatically (which is of course ridiculous). They sent me 3 and I returned each one, and then today I canceled my account (procrastinated, yeah I know). Well it's been 3 weeks since I returned them (simply by writing refused return to sender) and when I called to cancel I asked them about it and they said they didn't get them.

What can I do in this situation? They said it usually takes less than a week to get them.

uh i was a mamber for a while. they never sent you a movie unless you did not mark the selection.

I guess...either way they're not refunding my money and it's looking like they are going to say "Well we haven't recieved them so we can't" which is stupid because if I had screwed up on writing "Refused, return to sender" the post office would have sent them back to me, which they haven't. So unless the post office LOST them (extremely unlikely), then they are lying.

You're not supposed to wait until you get them. You're supposed to check off "do not send" in the mail you get, otherwise agreeing to buy their special selection of the month.

Okay, I didn't realize I could do taht, but either way, they have a return policy and they are not honoring it.

Then contact your credit card company. Hopefully you used AMEX. Either way, they should be able to open an investigation. Call Columbia House and have them contact the Supervisor of the mailroom.

Chances are, they got them....they just didn't know what to do with them when they came in, so they didn't change anything in the computer.

That's why you don't ask them if they got them back. Now the Customer Rep you talked to gets to swipe 3 DVDs and charge them to your account.

You should really read how this crap works before you sign up for it.

i can't feel sorry for you.

What do you mean read? It comes with no papers or anything. Maybe there are some papers INSIDE of the box, but I don't open the box because I want to return it easily.

Good luck cancelling them.

If you file a lawsuit I would join.

Cancelling was a huge pain in the ass. Their cancelation hours are slim, you can't do it online, the phone automation isn't very well detailed, and it's the only way to cancel. There usually were no "available" representatives at the time and I was tired of waiting forever to talk to them. When I finally got through I was disconnected the first time. At least I was finally able to cancel (at least I think I canceled, I could barely understand what the lady was saying).

Either way, I bought movies from them, got my collection, and canceled. They have a return policy that I AM FOLLOWING exactly as it says (even the lady said I did it right on the phone). If I don't see my account balance changed within a week, I'm going to contact Visa.

Every MONTH you get a statement. it has a magazine that shows what DVD's you can order and how many m ore you need to buy. It also has a section to check to refuse the selection of the month.

When I joined I called them and said that I do not want to receive any of their "Selection of the Month" dvds for any reason and that I will buy the dvds I want at my discretion. After that I never had to worry about sending the form back in time or sending back a dvd that I didn't want.

Theres also a procedure to follow if you accidently get a DVD/CD you don't want & I'm certain its not simply writing "refused" on the outside of the package!

From the returns help on columbiahouse.com:
If you haven't opened the mailing carton at all, simply write "Refused - Return to Sender" on the carton and drop it in the mail.

Of course I could be mistaken! 😉

Actually thinking back, I never joined Columbia house ... it was RCA that I had a membership with.

You can also refuse Selection of the Month online. It's on the Internet, call your Cable or Phone company for more info.
