WTF, Collection for Sales Tax on Car

I bought the car 3 years ago.....just today I get a letter in the mail from the State of Georgia asking for the sales tax. The letter says that the taxes must be "received" by the 25th. WTF?? They don't even give me a week to get it in to them after asking for it. Why did they take 3 freaking years to send it to me?

How did you ever get a license for the car? In this state, you have to pay the sales tax before they will issue a license.

It was purchased in another state.

Don't know which state you bought the car from but in Florida if you buy a car and registered the purchase price for less than book value...expect a letter to verify the purchase price.

This wasn't done until just recently and I had to verify 2 cars already.

Why does Georgia think they get sales tax on it then? 😕

I think almost all states are like that... I know when I lived in VT buying a car in tax free NH you would still have to pay VT sales tax.

Did you purchase it in another state in order to explicitly avoid paying the GA sales tax?

It's just another way to tax people. When I moved to Seattle from Ohio, I had to register my cars out here in WA. I had to pay sales tax on both cars, even though I had already paid that tax in Ohio years before when I bought the cars.

Taxes are normally paid in the garaging state, therefore, if you bought the car in another state, they did not have to charge you tax in the state where purchased, but the state where you reside will charge their normal rate. Normally called a "use tax".

Did you delay in registering the car?

As an example, I work in a dealership in Ca, but when a Nevada customer comes in, we charge them no tax here. When they register the vehicle in Nevada, they pay their tax there.

sounds like you "forgot" to pay the tax when you brought it into GA from the other state

better late than never! 😉
