so last night, I parked my car where I always park it. about 3 blocks away and on the correct side (there's Tuesday afternoon street cleaning on the other side of the street). when I walk out this morning to get in my car to go to work, it's gone.

I've parked in this spot on a pretty regular basis for the past year that I've lived in this neighborhood, and I don't have any overdo tickets, so my first thought is that it was stolen. I call 911, cause I can't really think of anything else to do to report a stolen car, and the guy answering the phone gives me the only attitude. jerk wouldn't even give me the correct number I was supposed to call.

I called the police station, and after 10 minutes of being bumped around between desks, I find out that my car had been towed. turns out that they were planning on doing roadwork on the street this afternoon. I saw nothing to indicate that any work had been done as I was standing out there on the street, and the lady on the phone is treating me like I'm the scum of the earth, insisting that there were signs all over the place.

wtf. I saw no signs. and to make matters worse, I'm completely out a day of work now. because I'm not the registered owner of the car (my dad is), I can't pick it up.

I walked around for a bit while trying to get in touch with one of my parents, and eventually saw ONE sign. at the end of the block.

pic to indicate:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/loki8481/wtf.jpg

the red arrows indicate the path that I drove, and the blue arrows indicate the path that I took to walk back to my apartment. there's no way that I, or any reasonable person in my situation, could have seen the arrows. especially at 1 am with half the street lights out.

it fvcking pisses me off that they'd only put up one sign for an entire block when they're going to be towing away cars in the morning :|

update: the place where the car was locked up was closed by the time my dad got out of work. it's going to cost me at least $200, plus whatever they're going to charge for keeping the car overnight. that's about what I'd be paying for an entire month of private parking at work; too bad there are no private lots by my house. heh. I took a couple pics to indicate where my car was parked and how far away/small the sign was.

my parents had an appointment with the family lawyer early next week anyways about some problems they've been having with their neighbors, so they'll ask him if he thinks it would be worth it to try and get any money back from the town (figuring the costs to get my car out of the lot plus the few hundred I lost by having to call out from work). it's probably not worth the time/energy/money, though. I'll just suck it up and continue looking for an apartment in another town (I've been looking to move for awhile because of the crappy parking situation).

Man, I used to live in the city and parking was terrible. There was a private parking lot behind my apartment and people would park there and the tow trucks which I call sharks would come in and tow like 4 cars a night. I saw some cars towed at a angle which I can imagine is bad for the car.

They did something similar to me once. I was driving my Mercury to work every day, but parked it in the same spot every night. They towed it away listing "dead storage" as the reason :|
All they had to do was look at any point between 8AM and 5PM and they could have seen the car was being used.

hmmm, interesting, can I use that in my latest book?

chapter 6
after Datt failed the assassination attempt on the school president John Train of Vermont Commonwealth University, he returned to find his car towed. It appears that the city workers hastily put up a single no parking sign six blocks away and then towed every car on that road minutes after.

there are 2 cars in our parking lot that I have never seen move the entire time I've lived here. the pavement is a lighter color in front of them from lack of tires driving on the pavement. every other spot is darker from cars pulling in and out.
waste of parking... and they never get towed or anything

Why don't you take a picture of where your car was parked to show that there was no signs around where you were parked to know?

I HATE tow companies... it's a serious problem in Gainesville, and I'm pretty sure you have to be a complete jerk to drive a tow truck.

I haven't even gotten towed, but I was almost killed by a tow truck driving on my bike.... apparently they're allowed to not only take your car when it's not parked illegally, but they don't have to obey traffic laws either

When I used to work at a Chevy dealership, some independent tow truck brought in a FWD Beretta. The dumbass towed it with the front wheels on the ground...and left it in Park :Q He said he towed it 16 miles. Front tires must have been screeching the entire way, because the (nearly new) tires were worn down to the cords where they were dragged.

Moral of the story, don't trust the wrecker drivers!

When I lived in East Lansing, we had the same situation behind our apartment complex. Giant parking lot, never more than half full...but the tow trucks were there every night, towing cars without permits for the lot. Bunch of ass holes.

Always leave the parking brake on and turn the steering wheel full lock. This way it's impossible for them to tow you.

No, then they will just tow it at a angle. I have seen them do that.

Seriously, my old apartment overlooked a private parking lot. Parking was tough, I had to park about 4 blocks away at night. There were some bars in the area and people would think it would be ok to park for a few hours there. Every night the shark would come in and tow cars. It was very common for me to see cars towed almost sideways.

People, if you're gonna park in a permit only zone and don't wanna get towed, buy 4 boots and lock up all the wheels. I'd like to see how the tow truck bastards can tow your car to the city pound.

you can't possibly be serious.....

I've seen them haul away cars on the flatbed, but not that many trucks have flatbeds, and would rather find another car than think a little.

Also, on some FWD stick cars, pull the e-brake, and put the car into R or 1. This way, the engine will turn, and you'll have a perfect excuse to sue the crap out of those retards.

Yea leaving the parking brake on would just cause your tires to skid as it's being towed I'd think.

Flatbed. They'll drag it up.

1) Take loads of pictures of the area where the work is being done, or video if possible. Make sure to document the lack of signs.
2) Take the city to court
3) ...
4) Profit?

Yup, they towed my brothers expedition. You can see the skid marks all the way to the tow shop. And they even broke his windshield too. He tried to sue them. But they blamed everything on him.:|

Last count I've had roughly... 15 cars and 1 motorcycle towed in the two years I've worked at my apartment complex. Of course, we have a private lot with paid, numbered parking spaces. Good luck getting everything worked out. :)

Last time my car got towed they wouldn't let me get it for three weeks for random crap. At 20 bucks a day, that adds up.
