WTF?? Caffeine may no longer be banned by the Olympics but marijuana still would be.

Um....are these people retarded?
The decisions were disclosed to the AP by professor Arne Ljungqvist, the Swedish anti-doping official who heads WADA's medical research committee.

"We must adjust our list to modern thinking and to changes of attitude and changes of knowledge," he said.

<snip>

The status of cannabis, which covers marijuana and hashish, was the subject of particularly intense debate.

Some have argued that cannabis should be left off the list because it's not performance-enhancing. But Ljungqvist noted that the new definition of doping also covers substances which violate the "spirit of sport."

This is an impressively stupid proposition since caffeine is a well-documented performance-enhancer while weed certainly isn't. This means you could be DQ'd for something you smoked last weekend while legally jacking yourself with enough caffeine to wake the dead.

Any bets as to how many sudden instances of cardiac arrest we'll see at the next Olympics if this goes through?

Marijuana is currently banned. So it would continue to be banned.

They now test your hematocrit in pro cycling. If it's over 50%, you're "benched" until it comes back down even if they can't prove you doped. Too many guys were having heart attacks and strokes because their blood was too thick.

Right, sorry.

The point is: why allow a documented performance enhancement drug but not allow or even bother testing for something that has no bearing on the actual competition? That's asinine.

Do you really want a javalin thrower or shot put person to be high while performing their event. Sure pot doesn't make you faster or stronger, but it does affect your judgement and reaction times, so instead of throwing a javalin on the field, they can end up throwing it into the stands.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard

If you don't know what it's like to be high, please do not try to make an argument like that. thanks.

If that started happening, I'd start watching the Olympics.

OMFG!! LOL!

That has got to be one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard on ATOT.

Also, just because pot might be in the blood does NOT mean that dude is high.

oh my god. read people, read.

violates the spirit of the sport. makes sense. i still dont agree with it though... i think its stupid. as long as the athletes arent puffing a blunt as they run the 100m, the drug testers should stay out of it.

I'm confused; how does a drug that makes you run faster NOT "violate the spirit of the sport"? They might as well give Ben Johnson his freaking medal back.

Weed is a mind altering drug. I thin it is banned more for the safety of others than to prevent unfair advantadges.
