Just got mail from the City of LA saying that I got a parking ticket on the 6th of July... Too bad I was in Santa Cruz. Also, the car described is a silver Toyota, but I drive a black Honda. The registration is also wrong. Is this a scam? The parking violation was this:

"Car drove away before officer could issue citation."

I really don't want to deal with someone else's mistake. Do I have to fill out paperwork for this? What in the world...

Edit:
Woops.. Pressed enter too fast.

Do you live in an apartment? Maybe that guy's registration is under your address...

I'd probably just wait for a second or final notice?
i.e., if it's a fake ticket there probably won't be a second or final notice after the "due date".

By the way, does the letter have any sort of disclaimer that says if it's not your ticket or you've already mailed out the payment then disregard the notice? I always thought that clause is always included in a std. government notice.

Crumble it up and throw it away.

They can't make you pay a fine just because you live at a certain address, nor can they prove that any of it ever happened. If it specifically has your name on it, then just send it in with no payment and a letter stating that you don't own that car and you were not in the area on that day. Tell them that nobody with a car matching that description lives at your address and that they should track down the owner and update their information.

If it ends like this:

"and finally: leave the $200 fine in used banknotes in a plain envelope in a street bin next to your apartment. Do it now!"

it's probably fake you know.

sounds bogus to me.

my school wrote me a fine one time, and i went in, and before they had a chance to argue i said 'i don't even have a car'

just call the number on the ticket and tell them the situation. i received a ticket in the mail for running and not paying a toll. the only problem was the picture on the ticket was a white bmw m3 and i drive a black honda prelude. they wiped it off the system when i called and explained. chances are your license plate is similar to theirs.

I got two bogus tickets (ticket #'s were in succession) from a college I attended in the past for summer classes. I wasn't even at that campus that year.

Needed my transcripts sent to my new employer however, and it wasn't worth fighting over $20 (i'd have to go to drive there, fill out stuff, drive there again and go to court). Sucks.

I don't even understand the offense. It sounds to me like someone started to park in a no parking zone, the meter maid didn't have time to get over there and write a ticket before the guy left, but the city still wants to collect on a non-existant violation...

Plate Number was probably copied incorrectly.
The ticket was prepared based on color/vehicle and plate. Plate Number is what is used to get address for citation. The ticket info will not get crossed checked unless challenged.

Call the number and give them the info that they request.
