what?

I  Arby's

you mean the price went up? it is all related to higher fuel prices, higher beef prices, higher corn prices, they all go together to make Arby's prices higher

Yeah, it was 5 for $5.95 for a while, then they quietly jacked it up to $6.95.
I responded by not going there.

5.95 was on the edge for me before, but it kinda brought Arbys food more into the traditional fast food pricing. $7.05 (after tax in OH) is pretty steep when I'm looking for a cheap meal on the go.

They need a dollar menu like the other guys. Thats all I eat off of these days when I do fast food. 2 Wendy's Jr Bacon Cheese is a nice 2 dollar lunch :)

I'm not sure what the problem is. They started the deal in the early 1990s at 5 for $5. Soon it became 5 for $5.55, then $5.95. So are you complaining that they raised the price a little bit over that much time?

I believe the last 5 for $5 deal was before 1995, but lets use that as a start. Lets also use 3% inflation.
1995: $5.00
1996: $5.15
1997: $5.30
1998: $5.46
1999: $5.63
2000: $5.80
2001: $5.97
2002: $6.15
2003: $6.33
2004: $6.52
2005: $6.72
2006: $6.92
2007: $7.13

So, they are actually a bit cheaper than 3% inflation. The deal isn't too bad. Especially considering that the minimum wage just rose.

The problem is that they first started the $5 for $5.95 as a limited thing, then said it was here to stay, and then jacked it up another dollar in fairly short order.
BK did the same thing with their daily deals, but at least it took longer (started out as $4, then $4.25, then $4.40, and as of the last month, $4.75). I think that took a few years.

5 sandwhiches = at least 2 meals. Total: $3.75 per meal. If you have kids that might get you 3 or 4 meals.

No, that is just a table of what a 3% inflation increase would look like. As you can see, Arby's should be at $7.13, but it is at $6.95 instead.

But wages have gone down so that makes it a lot steeper for the low class of the country.

Inflation is 3%? I could have sworn last year it was 1.15%

Do you ever think before typing. Lets look at numbers.

[*]Early 1990s: 5 for $5. Minimum wage: $4.25/hour. Total time worked to buy 5 Arby's sandwhiches in that deal: ($5) / ($4.25/hour) * (60 minutes/hour) = 70.6 minutes.

[*]Late 2007: 5 for $6.95. Minimum wage: $5.85/hour. Total hours worked to buy 5 Arby's sandwhiches in that deal: ($6.95) / ($5.85/hour) * (60 minutes/hour) = 71.3 minutes.

Egads! The minimum wage "low class" has to work an extra 42 seconds to buy that bundle of sandwhiches! The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Are you seriously going to argue about that number?

ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/cpi/cpiai.txt">Data source of CPI data, do your own math.</a> Historical inflation averaged 3.29% from July 1913 to July 2007. Inflation averaged 2.63% from July 1995 to July 2007. So forgive me for just picking a simple number to work with of 3% which is right in line with history.

So, if I use the CPI increase of 2.63% over that time frame, $5 in July 1995 becomes $6.83 now. Again, $6.95 is right about on target. Give it a couple of months and it'll match exactly.

But of course, now you will come back and say the CPI includes things like computers that got cheaper. So, I should use the PPI. And not just the full PPI, but the raw unprocessed food PPI. Well go looking for historical data on that. When you get it, bring it here and I can do the math. I can tell you that finished consumer foods went up in the lower 2% range over that time frame. I just don't know what happened to their raw material prices.

Not to mention that all of this is useless unless we get the exact date when the 5 for $5 started (I'm giving the worst case scenerio of 1995, but I know it started earlier than that). Suppose it started in 1992 instead of 1995, then at 2.63% inflation, the price should be $7.38 now, and $6.95 looks quite good.

Marketfresh sandwiches and curly fries are the only things you need concern yourself with at Arby's.

The problem is while inflation is going up at 3, they are also removing a similar amount of material from the sandwhiches while still raising prices.

I enjoy the Giant Roast Beef sandwich, I never get the regular ones because those are all premade and waiting for people to order. (Like with the 5x5 deal.)

Giant Roast Beef is so fresh and delicious.

But they had 5/$5 as recently as 2-3 years ago. It has shot up ~40% in that short of an amount of time.
