I bought a grill - it was for propane, then I realized I have REALLY easy access to natural gas going to the grill, so I returned it. Before it was returned, my girlfriends dad said next time to look for something with flavor trays/bars.

wtf is that? any models anyone recommends?

don't start with me over the flavor of hickory/charcoal. I know it tastes better - but I cook too often and have too little time to deal w/ cleaning.

As in all subjects, power is everything. Grills are rated by btu's. Shop for the most powerful grill you can afford that has good reviews.

ok but what about the drip tray junk? I thought the idea was grease goes somewhere then gets boiled when you grill later... or something

no time for cleaning? cleaning what?

I grilled all summer / fall / into winter and still haven't had to clean out my weber one touch gold's ash catcher

you flick the lever back and forth and it cleans itself

picture

the flavor bar thing is on the weber gas grills.

I got the big stainless steel (Hallmark) deal ($678.00) from Sams Club in 2004. Great grill, but a lot of bother for a couple of steaks. This Spring, Sam's had the big stainless smoker on for $350.00, so I got that too. Last week I was in the Atlanta Fryes and found a Charbroil Patio Buddy (I think) on sale for $65.00 and bought it. Little, round (18 inches) gas grill with wheels and self contained tank. Now I have the best of both worlds. If I want to do a full meal with veggies, The big grill comes out, If I want to smoke a season of really good sandwich meat, the smoker is the thing, but for just a quick grilling of a couple of hotdogs, chicken parts or a steak, the little, extremely portable Charbroil comes out. The Charbroil is well built with enameled grates and a burner that braises a piece of meat just great and it came with it's own tank. I'm a happy griller!

Like many things, you have to define your wants before buying. Are you grilling for a bunch on a large deck, or are you grilling for two on a balconey? Mostly doing meats or do you want to do veggies? Both? Lots of range in grills avaliable and most aren't too pricey. Incidently, the little Charbroil is simple to clean as well.

Gas grilling isn't grilling. It's just baking in an outside oven.

I have a very nice stainless steel Jenn Air we got this summer. Very convenient, heats up fast, easy to control the heat.

And the food tastes just like I cooked it on the stove. Waste of time.

Now when I want a steak, I fire up the old charcoal grill.

Cha Ching, we have a winner. If you're a dockers shorts wearing wuss, then Gas is the way to go when you don't want to taste the real "COOKOUT" flavor of charcoal :)

No other way to cook a burger or steak than Charcoal.

If you are going to go that far, just do the real thing with a brick BBQ and hardwood. I love that too, but really like the ease of gas. Gas grills get flavor from the charred grease in the heated media. You are right in that the stainless grill I have doesn't taste as good as charcoal or hardwood either. The small Charbroil, however, collects grease on the media over the flame and tastes pretty good.

Absolutely. Propane grills are a waste of time (in my opinion). I stick with a charcoal grill, and before each grilling I scrape off the grill but I don't ever wash it off so it keeps the flavor. Instead of charcoal briquettes try using hardwood charcoal.

the trays are used for wood chips( smoked, red cedar...etc)they give the food a smoked flavor...make sure its a certified grill ( CSA/UL certified)and one of the best units is to have the burners made from stainless steel, they will not rot out.

natural gas... of course as stated tons of times in here, charcoal is much better, but since you're asking about gas, go with the natural.. i mean why not? and you won't ever accidentally run out of gas.. and it's probably cheaper
