I think the reactions of some people celebrating the tradgedy that has befallen the world in recent days (in places like Egypt and the Palestinian controlled areas) illustrate the need for us to define a new psychological disorder. While most might recognize the term Schadenfreud (experiencing or gaining joy from another person?s pain, misfortune or discomfort), celebrating the deaths of thousands of innocents rises far above the realm of what one would expect of any reasonable human being. Just as megalomania is defined as the psychological extremes of egotism (which is generally acknowledged as a character flaw, but not as a mental illness), we need to coin a term to recognize the extremes of schadenfreud. I don't know of what practical use that defining the term would be, but we should recognize it for what it is and be able to label it accordingly when it happens.
