WTB Zippy PSL-6701p 700w power supply ?

Having problems w/ my new A64 system. check sig.

Funny my P4 system also same config has no problems.

Here's what I get: w/ 2 hd's systems boots fine.

w/ 4 hd's I get no video until the desktop. (no bios screen)

Since I don't have any sata drives, I'm using the 3 - indv. sets of wire
plugs.

Wire set
#1 3 - 4 pin molex ( 2 to videocard, 1 to mobo)
#2 2 - 4 pin molex (1 to cdrom, 1 to 80 & 120 case fan)
2 - mini plugs (1 to floppy, 1 to Livedrive)
#3 2 - 4 pin molex w/ 2 Y-adapters ( 4 scsi hd's)

So I'm thinking that the 36A on the +12v rail on the Antec 550EPS
is not enough . 😱

So I think I need a strong single rail psu. ie Zippy 700w (45w on the +12V rail)

What do you guys think ??

Any help appreciated..

Jose

Have you tried putting the power supply from your other rig into the Athlon64 powered one? I suggest doing some trouble shooting on the system before assuming it's the power supply. It could be that the mobo is the fault here. It might be worth it for you to pick up a PSU tester to see how it's doing. If the PSU tests fine (try running your p4 rig with it) then start looking at the drives, video card, mobo, etc... It could be a component that you don't think could be doing it, don't rule out anything until you've tested with 'known good' replacements.

I get the system up fine w/ only 2 hd's, but when all four hd's, I don't get any video till the desktop.

I switched one of the 4 pin molex to the video card to share duties w/ the case fans & the mobo & video card..
And the other video 4 pin molex now shares the cdrom and the Livedrive & floppy..

Now I'm getting video on boot up.. seems to work fine now w/ all 4 hd's plugged in..

I still think 550 will not be enough , if I go SLI ...

All the hd's & cdrom, livedrive came from a previous 2.4 P4 system w/ a 365w ps.. The only new components are the DFI mobo, proc, ram, video card & power supply..

I think I'll get the Radio Shack watt meter to compare my P4 rig w/ the new A64 rig to see how much I'm drawing from the AC outlet..

It sounds like the video card that you went with was getting picky about how you fed it power. I know my eVGA 6800GT want to have a feed all to itself (from the PSU) NOTHING else on that line. If your card (the BFG OC) has two feeds/connections, then consider connecting at least one of them to the power by itself.

Also, with what you changed between when a 365W PSU was feeding your system to now is nothing minor. You changed all the major/power hungry parts of the system. I'm running four hard drives three optical drives, a 6800GT, PVR card (tv tuner), Athlon64 3400+ processor, nForce 3 250 chipset mobo, two case fans (120mm) and a 120mm fan on the processor heatsink. Everything is humming right along on the Antec NeoPower inside the case. If/when I decide to get another pair of hard drives, I might need to get a larger PSU. Then again, it might just work out fine as it stands. I should be able to go the full term I intend to go between upgrades (12-18 months)... I might even split off the PVR aspect of my system into a tiny configuration (to make a set top box). If that works out, it could make things even better...

Sounds like your PSU could be faulty. There's no way you'd max out a 550 with those components.

good post. your PSU will power a freight train. just make sure that the 6800 has its own molex connector/line if there are enough 😕
you dont need more power, you just need more connectors.

Since I used another molex from a diff. cable it seems to work now.

What's the diff. in using 2 molex connectors on the same cable compared to using 2 from two seperate cables ??

Is not the full 36A available thru all connections on the psu ?? Believe me when I use 3 connectors on the same cable run it won't show video, but just switching one of the plugs that
feed the video card to one that the floppy is on makes a difference .. Very strange indeed.

I'm seriously considering getting the 700w zippy to cover any future expansion possiblities.. 🙁

I guess this is the bleeding edge, but I need to stop the bleeding ... ;p
