WTB: Diablo 3 Laptop

I'm looking to get a new laptop soon, since my old one (a cheapy from 2006) is a piece of junk now. However, my plan (way back in 2008) was that my next laptop would be Diablo 3-capable. It's a good thing I didn't go out and buy a laptop back then with the hope that Diablo 3 would be released any time soon!

Now that it's 2011 I figure Diablo 3 has got to be getting close (right?!?!). So, I'm asking for your speculation:

- Is it too early to buy a laptop with the requirement that it will be capable of running Diablo 3?

- What are reasonable assumptions for Diablo 3's requirements?

I'd really like it if a $500 laptop could play Diablo 3 on low-medium settings. My desktop (with a newer video card) will be my main Diablo 3 rig, so I won't mind low-medium graphics when occasionally playing on a laptop.

Once diablo 3 is actually out your laptop will be obsolete. Don't think it's scheduled for release until 2012 at the earliest and knowing blizzard that will slip till 2013.

Reasonable assumptions for minimum specs would probably be:

Dual Core CPU @ 2.2/2.4GHz+
2GB RAM (maybe 3GB Vista/7)
256MB+ DX9 GPU (probably run fine on Sandy Bridge IGP tho)
Your Soul (along with your job etc)

It's Blizzard so don't expect requirements much higher than Starcraft II/WoW etc.

yep blizzard threw everyone on the WoW wagon. I wouldn't be surprised if there is only 8 or 10 people working on D3 most of the time.

I'd hold off on the laptop for now, wait until we have some sort of an idea of what will be needed to play it.

The longer you wait, the more power you'll be able to get for $500. Best to buy the laptop the day you also buy Diablo 3.

If you absolutely need a laptop soon, then get one. But if you can wait then I would. Sandybridge (if the mobile version shares the same name) will start to be utilized in the mobile market more and better integrated and mobile graphics are one of the better features. By the time Diablo 3 comes out SB (or something newer) should be the norm and easily had in a $500 notebook.

Ugh... I guess I had naive hope that Diablo 3 would release in 2011 Q4. My thinking, therefore, was that a $500 laptop then wouldn't be incredibly different from a $500 laptop today, so now was a reasonable time to buy.

I suppose I do have terrible forecasting luck when it comes to Blizzard games: I bought an Xbox in summer 2003 so I could play StarCraft: Ghost later that year, and I built a new desktop in early 2009 so I could play StarCraft II later that year. Oops!

If Diablo 3 doesn't release by the end of 2012, then something is VERY wrong at Blizzard.

I don't buy that they simply refuse to release a product until it's "perfect" - it isn't like Diablo 2 was perfect (nor any other Blizzard game). Therefore, how long can it REALLY take to get a game to "very, very good" status??

It's all speculation but I think Q4 2011 would at least have some beta action if not released. As others have said, safest thing to do is wait and just buy one either once it comes out or you could just wait until min system reqs are posted.

I was in your boat, but didn't have the luxury of waiting so I bought HP Pavilion dv6-3143us NoteBook a little over a month ago for $600.

I'm not really worried about it playing on low settings. Unless you need it for another reason, just hold out.

Overall though, $500 at time of release will certainly get you min requirements so don't fret there.

I hate these threads. HATE THEM!

But what do you hate most? I mean, it's a large list of annoyances here:

-speculating about D3 release date
-making a new thread about D3 when there's other D3 threads
-the OPs assumption that he can make a PC last for several years (and a very cheap PC at that)
-talking about hardware in the software section
-and many more!

What's hilarious is that for some reason none of you have the capacity to avoid them when they frustrate you so much. Like seriously just don't click the thread. No one is forcing you to read...

-making a new thread about D3 when there's other D3 threads
-the OPs assumption that he can make a PC last for several years (and a very cheap PC at that)

- So what - what avid D3 fan hasn't speculated about the release date?
- So what - there isn't a single Diablo III thread in the last 5+ months that this fits well in
- Um, typically PCs do last for several years
- With that logic you'd bitch about it being in the hardware section
- Smug much?

So let me get this straight.

You want to buy a GAMING LAPTOP (lol) for a game that won't be out for at least a year (lol).

Do yourself a favor and just put your damn wallet back in your pants.

Oh and I doubt D3 will be that demanding. From the looks of it it's just a warmed over WOW with an isometric perspective.

Anger issues much?

speculating about D3 release date

No, I’m just asking if it’s “soon” so I can get a new laptop. I hardly think asking “soon” vs. “not soon” qualifies as speculation.

making a new thread about D3 when there's other D3 threads

No other thread addresses my question. Hence, a new thread.

the OPs assumption that he can make a PC last for several years (and a very cheap PC at that)

Yes, I can. If Diablo 3 has specs relatively close to those for StarCraft 2, then a couple-year-old computer should be fine for playing with low-medium settings. Key words: low-medium.

talking about hardware in the software section

I’m only asking about hardware as it pertains to a computer game. If I was using this forum to simply ask “recommend a $500 laptop” then you’d have a point. However, that’s NOT what I’m asking here – it does pertain to PC Gaming.

I think they readily mentioned this before.

Anyhow on the hardware side, with new hardware coming out just around the corner (almost feels like there's new stuff either coming out or being announced every month - and to be completely honest, it's not that far off the actual timing!) like Bulldozer and newer mobile GPUs it's definitely not time to buy a new laptop now and expect it to be "current" when D3 hits.

If you must buy one before it comes out (if only to play Starcraft II or Brink or whatever) you're still better off on waiting for the big sales season; like the back-to-school season or even bettter; black friday.

Well, I'm not looking for my next laptop to remain "current" for any amount of time in the sense that it will never be a top-end laptop. I feel that high-end laptops stop being high-end LONG before mediocre laptops stop being mediocre. Nonetheless, your advice is received and appreciated.

Waiting for a back-to-school sale is a good idea, and I can wait that long. Black Friday, though, is probably not going to happen. Not because of the time until then, but rather how obnoxious it is to "compete" for those elite laptop sales in the painfully-early hours of the morning.

I was more just jabbing at Shorty because he had such a strong reaction to the thread. I just listed all the typical things people get up in arms about that may be present here. I wasn't really serious, which should be evident given my first post in this thread was a genuine suggestion.

Yeah, I didn't notice that you posted earlier. My bad.

Dont buy a laptop till its out, if you need a laptop now then it will likely run diablo 3 if its a gaming one, ask over at notebookreview.com they'll tell ya whats good right now.
