Hi guys,

I'm helping my sister look for a house in the Fairfax County, VA area. Do you guys know of any e-realties or a good place to find moderately priced homes? I guess somewhere in the 400K-500K range? Already tried Ebay. :(

Thanks,

Cathy

Well, in that county it is. She was about to buy a house with asking price $440k, and it was so ugly. It was log-cabin brown and only had 3bed/2bath. It was only 1500sq. The only good thing was the yard was really large. The house was built in the 70s and it was just so ugly. I guess if she lived where I lived (FL), it would be a mansion.

Man for half a million if that's all she can spend she might as well keep renting. Personally I wouldn't live in anything worth less than $800k.

Actually dayum those housing prices! half a million in this area would get you an AWESOME freaking house. HUGE and in a nice area.

I belive realtor.com has all MLS listed houses on there. Anything sold by a realtor should have an MLS number and thus should be on realtor.com.

Check local newspaper and/or newspaper website to look for 'For Sale By Owner' houses. These obviously aren't going to be on realtor.com. You can also hop in the car and drive around looking for "For Sale" signs from owners not wanting to use a realtor.

Man, I wish I was realtor in your neck of the woods. I can't imagine the commissions they are raking in. But heck, I guess they need it if a moderate house is $500,000.

Egads!

Once you leave BFE things get a little costlier ;)

But on a bright note you can sell that house for a good amount usually.

I may live in Iowa, but I don't know if a metro area population of over 200,000 is "BFE".

$300k-400k can you something like this. or this

Was just giving vi_edit cr@p ;) Just my sense of humor, not talking trash towards you Crantang. And yes, houses cost about the same if not more in Chicago's north burbs.

Hmm, as for the metro area population of over 200,000 is "BFE," it's in the eye of the beholder and to me thats middle of nowhere.

400K near me would get me a 4000sqft house with in ground pool, sperate garage with apartment, plus a minumum of 10 acres.

I used to live near Fairfax and for me to go back I would have to be earning $150,000/year.

BTW forgot to tell ya, ziprealty is good. But nothing is going to replace a lot of footwork and the local paper and local agents.

Can she possibly do a condo instead of a house?
Also, realty might be in a bit of a bubble right now, so perhaps waiting might work for her. It's hard to say b/c local conditions vary so much, but I think that in my area condos and some houses are being overbuilt and the prices will fall for them soon enough. Also, consider betting by buying a cheap house in an area that will gentrify, can save a lot of money and down the road she might live in a cool area.

What is Intraweb? Do you mean the MD/VA/DC area? I think that's where my sister and her fiance need it because the fiance works at Orbital Science in Sterling, I think. Does anyone know what the local paper is over there?

No. When I went to college my dad actually bought some property just off campus and had several houses knocked down and a new one built for me. It was about 7k square feet and I had two staff 24/7. I threw some of the wildest parties. Didn't do barely a lick of work but my dad gives like $5/million year to the university so needless to say my GPA was top of the line anyway.

Mrsskoorb and I are currently in the process of buying an entire suburb of Birmingham and making a house that covers the whole thing (well not all house - a lot will be backyard and estate gardens). It should be in the vicinity of several square miles (1500 car garage) and will have various helipad stations throughout to allow for timely travel throughout the complex.

Seriously, she should go talk to some realtors. As a buyer, there's no reason not to.
