WSUS issue: cant connect to console from localhost

Running Server 2003 with WSUS, set this up a few months ago and things have been working fine. This is at a community college where I work with the admin. The WSUS updates arent being used often and Id been busy and went in to do some management a couple of weeks ago...and the Update Services console on the server cant connect to the WSUS service. Grrr.

Google reveals this:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com...s/thread/df893b9e-2e42-4e9e-ae9e-28c2c5c1a7c1

and this
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009746

Makes sense, Id installed some updates and rebooted the box to do a memory upgrade on it a few weeks ago so Im pertty sure thats when the problem appeared.

So I followed the solution in the kb article: reinstall sp2, nada.
Roll back the possible problem update: nada.

IIS seems to work, as i get the generic "site under construction" page when I use IE or firefox to look at the server. When I open the Update Services console it *should* already be connected locally and giving me the usual info, it has nothing, and selecting "connect to server" and using machine name, hostname, localhost and IP all give me "cannot connect to server" issues.

an NMAP scan doesnt show anything on 8530, the default wsus port (and I damn sure dont ever recall changing that)

Not seeing anything relevant in the event viewer. Not really sure what else to poke around at, anyone have any suggestions?

I haven't had this exact issue, but for some reason it is reminding me of a previous issue I had with IIS, SP2, and the citrix web pages. I remember that every install seemed to want to overwrite files from the others. I believe the only way to get things working and stable was for us to do a full reinstall, IIS->SP2->web page.

However, a word of warning. I got called 3 times last night, and got no sleep so I know my brain is not fully functioning.

yeah, well before i do that ill have to find out what to backup for the WSUS server, cause fuck me if im going through the approval/rejection process from scratch again.
