Hi there.

I installed Windows Server Update Services on a small sever I manage, its my dads so he isnt too fussed about problems that may occur (4 PC's).

Anyways, it downloaded 9GB of updates (didnt really think it would download that much, and exceeded his downloads, but thats not the end of the world)!

Anyway, one of the PC's stopped working. Im guessing it didnt like one of the update. Well, im pretty sure it was the update, or possibly a big coincidence? I say that because in the WSUS console, it didnt show that PC as being updated, or even connected to the WSUS server, and when I tryed to install windows again, it said that the C drive has 29999 (or something) and 29998 was free (1mb taken??), yet the windows logo would come up when trying to start windows. It would stay at the logo for ages then the flashing line.

If I tryed safe mode, it would stop at MUP.sys i think the file was.

Do you guys think this is a big coincidence that this computer stopped starting up? Or maybe it did use an update which it didnt like?

Not too sure about ever using WSUS again....

I'm not following why you think the cause is WSUS, since WSUS reports it wasn't even seeing the damaged computer.

Even if WSUS did deliver the (bad?) update, WSUS' defaults won't deliver anything that Windows Automatic Update wouldn't deliver, too.

WSUS' uses are usually:

1) Limit the Internet bandwidth used for updates
2) Control which updates being installed on the client PCs
3) Monitor whether client PCs are being updated

If you don't plan to monitor and control the updates, then WSUS isn't of much value. It's also easy to go overboard and configure WSUS to download a LOT of unneeded updates.

If you have a more specific question, maybe folks can help.

Well automatic updates was turned off on the client computer, and the group policy shouldhave turned it on and pointed it to WSUS. I just found it a MASSIVE coincedence.

And totally agree with it downloading a lot of uneeded updates. Have changed the configuration to only download those extremely critical ones now.

WSUS is fine. I use and have used it in organizations with up to 500PCs and 50 servers. No issues ever.

But that is only true if you look at what you approve and deliver to the desktop. And test.

For 4 PCs, WSUS is probably overkill and Windows auto update would make more sense to me.

Anyway, mup.sys may or may not be the problem. I have a link below for you to review and see if anything matches.

Sounds like you are connecting two dots too me. WSUS delivers patches you approve. It is really a localized windows update.

Sounds like something else is going on with a machine that has 1MB free on the hard disk.
