:awe: :awe: :awe:

The problem: Will the Verizon iPhone be LTE? If not, will they be releasing concurrent updates with AT&T during the summer, or will the lifecycle be the standard one-year model and we won't see an LTE model (or AT&T summer model for Verizon) until January 2012?

My guess is that the Verizon iPhone will be a CMDA/GSM combo phone - CDMA within the states, GSM worldwide so you can travel with it. Then in January 2012, we'll see the iPhone 5 in LTE/GSM, which AT&T will get first over the summer. The catch for consumers is that Verizon is changing it's early upgrade policy from 12 to 20 months, which would make sense for them to milk the iPhone because all us Apple nerds will want the iPhone 5 in 2012 and will have to pay full price for the upgrade.

Actually...doesn't the Verizon iPhone HAVE to be LTE? iirc, you can't talk and use the web at the same time on Verizon's "3G" phones (EVDO is it?).

Edit: OK, just heard that Verizon's network has been updating to let you talk/surf on CDMA. So that makes perfect sense from both Apple's history and Verizon's business POV: sell a 3G Verizon iPhone now, then upgrade to 4G in a year while existing users are still under the full-price-upgrade contract, because everyone will want 4G when it comes out and will pay a pretty penny to do so. Sneaky sneaky! 😉

Holy misleading title batman... All that article says is they're officially announcing it on Tuesday. I didn't see anything about them also shipping it then.

I wonder if they will raise the $10/gb over 5gb price

I hope not. I miss Unlimited already.

I won't bite unless it's 4G. I'm pretty happy with my iPhone running the AT&T iPad chip for $15/$25 a month and a separate basic Verizon cell phone. I'd rather have one device, but I'd also rather have 4G now that it's available (yay super speedy tethering!), especially if I'm going to pay full price for a smartphone plan. Plus Facetime etc. would be real nice over 4G.

If I had to bet, I'd say no LTE and it'll be a dual CDMA/GSM capable phone. Qualcomm has a CDMA/GSM capable chip. So you can have one model of phone that would be capable of supporting both GSM and CDMA without the need for separate hardware.

Think about it. Qualcomm recently had a job listing for an Apple software engineer. Qualcomm makes a chip that is capable of both CDMA and GSM. Verizon iPhone rumors are off the charts. Verizon runs on a CDMA network. Sometimes 2+2 does indeed equal 4.

There's also no real financial or competitive reason for Apple to release an LTE capable phone at this time. The LTE networks of both AT&T and Verizon are simply too immature.

I can't wait. My boss hates ATT and said he'll purchase all of us iPhone 4's on the release day. I don't really care too much about 3G vs 4G, I just want the phone.

I'll eventually get a 4G phone from Sprint when they get a phone worth a damn.

I seriously doubt we'll see an LTE iPhone at all this year. The power requirements are just too high given Apple's design goals for battery life. Just as with 3G they'll hold back and wait until die shrinks can produce a suitable low-power chip. So be prepared to wait a while.

I've got an EVO on Sprint, and I have to agree with a friend that has one that has one as well, the 4G makes no difference in day to day use of the phone, we keep the 4G turned off.

It does make quite a difference downloading apps, but I can do that over WiFi nearly as fast. I do use the EVO as my primary internet source at home and crank on the 4G and it's awesome, but if Sprint restricted data use, I'd be over my cap in the first week of the month, am using it now and streaming a Netflix movie as well... I don't think Verizon is going to be that generous.

I'm mostly interested in (1) FaceTime over 4G, and (2) tethering to a laptop over 4G. Plus I'm in no rush because I've got the iPad SIM in my iPhone 3GS, so it makes a pretty good iPad Mini for $15 to $25 a month 😀

What do you use to VoIP out? Tempted to pick-up my friend's unlimited iPad sim, but I have a great deal with T-Mobile. Unfortunately, I'm only able to get EDGE speeds.

Just Skype. There's a bunch of stuff like Google Voice, Line2, etc. though. I don't use it all that much though, because if I get like 3 bars or less the call quality gets cruddy real quick - and AT&T is terrible in my area.

I mostly use mine for data, like if I'm going somewhere and need a phone number or an address or I'm just trying to find something. Radio too sometimes in the car if I don't have a podcast handy.

I'm planning on picking up a iP4 or 3GS on AT&T (used), I currently use an iPad sim in a 3G occasionally, will likely sell the iPad and just run with the iP4...

Sold my WiFi iPad the other day, still have the 3G to sell soon 🙂 I hacked a color nook last month, so I really don't need multiple tablets, I do love the iPad, but have a crapload of toys already...
