I saw someone else post a thread about poll results, so I figued this topic might spawn some conversation as well.

Are there people who feel like they are voting against their interests (like the rural poor who vote against theirs)?

Really? So following that logic why didn't McCain win last time cause surely all the white people voted for him. :rolleyes:

Because white people as a whole aren't as racist as minorities, coupled with the first real black candidate for POTUS put forth by a major party. Obama was, and still will, get very high % of the black vote simply because of that reason. Just the way it is....

At first sight, this is a very easy conclusion to make, but historically blacks have voted Democrat. Once there will be a black repub candidate (if ever, lol), then we'll see.

Aw, how cute; chunky chiming in on another debate he is woefully misinformed on.

As a previous poster just indicated, blacks have voted Dem for decades, regardless of color.

We would have had a black Repub candidate this time if Cain had been able to keep it in his pants.

I don't think it's fair to call black folks racist over Obama. When you make up 12% of the population and you're 0 for 42 on Presidents, it's not unreasonable to jump on the first competitive black candidate. Especially since, as you point out, blacks vote Democrat in numbers almost as high anyway, so it's really not that big a change.

I think Ken Mehlman, former chaiman of the RNC, said it best:

Unfortunately, the GOP hasn't learned that lesson and they still kowtow to the spideys and the a777pilots of America.

Wow. You guys need to go study some American history. Newsflash, Obama is a Democrat which has gotten a large percentage of the black vote historically. It might just be that they think Democratic policies are more inline with their views.

I understand that - that's already a known. There is no way though that blacks are going to shun "their" candidate for POTUS like white voters are - potentially - going to/thinking about, this election. I'm obviously not talking about voters that vote Dem/Rep each election regardless of the candidate, I'm talking about people that can actually be influenced one way or the other. Blacks in that category are not going to be influenced as easily as whites. I don't really blame them, if I was in their shoes generation after generation and finally a serious black POTUS candidate came up, I'd be voting for him too (unless his policies were just insane).

Absolutely shocking! Who would have guessed that. I really thought Romney would get at least 50% of the AA vote. :D

No surprise, I don't think anybody expected Blacks to vote for Romney. The question is one of turnout among Black voters. Will Obama's support of gay marriage, which appears unpopular in the Black community, reduce the turnout?

Hopefully it will force black voters to think about the similarities between blacks' struggle for equal rights and gays' struggle for equal rights. I think the similarities are often overstated - the vast majority of blacks never had the opportunity to be "in the closet" about being black, nor were gays ever considered property - but they are at their core the same struggle.

Not that I want Obama to win, I don't. But the concept that government should not have the power to discriminate against an otherwise law abiding minority to please the majority's sensibilities is more important than the difference between Obama and Romney.
