WRT54GS Linksys keeps dropping me...

I have tried everything I could find. Stopping the Wireless Zero Config. Setting up static IP. Disabling the repeater (in case it was wanting to go back and forth). DCHP enabled. Currently it's setup for WEP 128-Bit. SSID enabled. I don't know the version.

The first weekend we had it, we didn't have any troubles. But now it disconnects every 5-20 minutes. I can't play CS:S like this. It's also not in a office/room but for a motel (the reason for the repeater) . Yes, I am living a motel this summer. The lady who owns the place wanted to put in internet to compete with the rest of hotels in the area and I told her I would help. She had already bought the router, modem, and internet when she told me. I did move the router to my room (since it's cable broadband and cable is throughout everywhere) with the repeater turned off and it stilll drops my internet. Right now, I am just streaming radio to see when it gets dropped. Although, even though I lose internet, it does NOT say I lost network connection (like when you unplug your ethernet cable).

I have read that people have problems with the router over heating with constant throughput...but it's cold in these motel room with plenty airflow.
I get GOOD~VERY GOOD connection...so signal quality is not it.

Am I just missing something??

Any thoughts or ideas??

Do you still regularly lose internet if plugged in to the AP via Ethernet?

1. Update Firmware if not current.
2. Update Wireless NIC driver if not current.

Are you or your neighbors recently started using cordless phones? Depending on frequency; wireless devices such as phones, baby monitors, wireless speakers etc. can cause drop outs to your WAP connection. *Try changing the frequency used by the AP to a different/higher channel and rebooting the device.

The firmware is what I least want to do, but if I have to....

As for the channel, I switched to 11 when I realized she has the cradles right beside the router (a 5.8Gh and a 2.4Gh phone).

My WNIC is the latest.
I wanted try wired to the router, but I was too tired by that time.

I will try that tonight, if that doesn't work....sounds like a firmware update to me.

i have the same prob i think...let me know if you figure it out please. I have some lynksis router and then the dsl hookup box.

Mine times out every so often...like flicks on and off. The veiw network connections thing says it was still connected. It's not a problem for most games, PC or xbox, other than a momentary lag. However instant messanger logs off when it does this, and any download will pause, and usually have to be started from scratch. Web pages with a lot of data are sometimes almost impossible to load.

I always assumed it was our crappy DSL, but i'll check what model i have.

My CS:S freezes for a sec, and everyone on the server become invisible minus their gun. So all I see are guns flying in midair. Also, for some reason my Xfire disconnects and reconnects more often than the internet cutting out. So it'll kick me out of my movie or anime I am watching.

Basically, the same thing happens in BF2. But it just kicks me out, telling me error.

Linksys routers had a problem when transferring large filesizes and sometimes random disconnects because the clockspeeds were not set high enough I think. The new firmware fixed this. Try downloading the new fireware. Remember to upgrade it from the computer connected directly to it.

I have a WRT54G.

interesting i found this thread on the front page... because I was seconds away from reposting the exact same issue. good thing i looked :p

I have the exact same linksys router and have the same problems. I have tried to update the firmware on sevearl occasions, but when i point the router to the file on my computer it simply says "that is not a firmware file" or something to that effect. I can't figure it out! the firmware I download is direct from linksys support page.

edit: as a side note, a direct ethernet connection stays connected without so much as a hiccup

I have a similar problem with a WRK54G LimpSys, and the RMA router is due to arrive today.

Mine is 100% repeatable, if I go to MSNBC and attempt to view any of the videos on their site, it locks the whole thing up. I've played the whole game with LimpSys, reloading firmware even though it was already at the latest version, adjusted MTU's and on and on.

I am convinced that this is a serious bug in their firmware, and the basically don't give a damn. I'm hoping the unit received on the RMA is a different hardware version (I have v1.1 and there is a v2.0 out) which has a different firmware.

I used to be an avid supporter and user of LinkSYS, but I'm just about over them, and I will NEVER buy another LinkSYS product, ever! My next router will most likely be a Buffalo

Ahh...crap. My router is v5.0...

And I found this while looking for the firmware update.

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=6

-note: Stay away from WRT54G v1.x (125Mhz CPU) and WRT54G v5.0 / WRT54GS v5.0 VxWorks + limited ram. The is now however a DD-WRT micro version 3rd party firmware for the v5.0's but you need to add a serial port to the motherboard and use JTAG to flash the WRT to gain linux compatable OS. for more information checkout the wiki at http://www.dd-wrt.com

I was also about to post with the very same problems. I have had the WRT54GS for about a week now. I either have an excellent signal, or no signal (rare). However, Neither my girlfriend or I can get a gauranteed connection in our very small apartment. (Thanks for those links, Parkre. Very helpful) There is a half wall-separating the room where her laptop resides and the router. My desktop is in the room with the router, and it has been easier for me to connect.

I don't know too much about networking, so it's very frustrating. I also have 128 bit WEP enabled as well as the SSID. I moved speakers onto the floor, turned off my TV, moved my cell phone (all on one side of the half-wall; directly in the path of the router and her laptop)...you get the idea. My initial thought was to upgrade the firmware before I saw this post. After following Parkre's links, I've discovered I have version 6. I'll see if there's anything on Linksys' website about it. Anyone else stumble across issues with this version?

I'm actually using D-link USB adapters (old router was a D-link 802.11b). So, my adapter is only b; which is fine. But I have noticed that when everything is crapping out, my signal goes from 11mb/s to 5.5 or 1mb/s. I've never been sure how to interpret this...but I'm starting to suspect that I shouldn't call Comcast and fuss at them... (which has become a hobby for me!)

When I am flustered, I like to call my ISP and complain....jk

So far, I can't get anything to work and it just keeps dropping me. At this point, updateing the router seems fruitless from what I have found and it doesn't seem that anyone has found a fix. From my understanding, all previous versions run off linux, version5 runs off Vxworks. And the only thing to do is to flash it using a serial port to change it to a Linux OS. But I haven't heard of anyone doing it nor any success stories.

Yeah, the WRT54Gv5 is crap. Sorry to be so blunt but it's been well documented that it has problems.

If you are looking at a new router get the WRT54GL instead, which is the venerable WRT54Gv4 in disguise.
