WRT54GS and wireless 'G Only' setting

Montano

I have my Linksys router set to 'wireless G only', as it seems when 11.b devices are on my network, they slows it down.

So today I get my new Axim that say it's 11.b and when I turn it on it finds and connects to my network without issue....... so what exactly does 'wireless g only' actually mean ?

It is supposed to mean "accept only G modes of operation and data rates"

Technically it disables all CKM (i think that's the b encoding) and only allows OFDM rates/operation. Sounds like you access point isn't doing what it is told. But any new wireless card is going to be G. It's probably very difficult to find a b only client - that technology is ancient.

Even though PDA WiFi still techically uses 802.11b I think all it means now is that they are limited to 11Mbps. If you read into the specifications many of the internal WiFi adapters have many features of 802.11g, which is possibly why it is working with your AP.
