wrt54g + ???

alrighty peeps

i'm making my first forey into wireless and need some suggestions.

first of all, i'm intent of getting a Linksys WRT54g wireless router.
now the question is, what wireless adapter should i get for my computer?
naturally, it might seem like it's complement - the WMP54g... however I'm open to suggestions.

First and foremost, G routers generally won't get you a faster connection to the internet when compared to a B router (11mbps) because Cable connections usually max out at 3 or so megabits per second. To answer your question, the card shouldn't be too much of a problems. Anything should work...just go for the cheapest, i guess.

Can I suggest a netgear setup instead? I'm actually using the Linksys router (plain G) and 2 computers set up with netgear cards and one with a linksys card. The router did not work out of the box- annoying I had to reset it to factory defaults (I hadn't changed anything) before it worked. Also the linksys usb card I use is Very flakey. Both of the netgear cards were simple setups and stable since.

since you already have a Linksys G router why not just stick to the same brands for G card and since it's not that much more then B card...true that you don't need anything faster then B for cable modems but down the line what if you need to transfer file wireless between 2 computer...you're gonna appreciate 54G...

i have another question concerning the actual router Linksys WRT54G.

on linksys' website the datasheet for the product says it supports WPA security but when i looked at the box at best buy it only says 128-bit encryption / WEP. what's going on? are there two or more versions of this product floating around... and if so, how do i tell the difference... i didn't see any version numbers on the box.

I am running a WRT54G v2.2 w/ Linksys 3.03.6 firmware. The re are two WPA security options: WPA Pre-Shared Key & WPA - RADIUS.

As long as it's a WRT54G, you should be ok. I have one and it handles WPA and WEP (64 and 128bit).

As for what wireless card. I've Used Netgear (never worked right), SMC (Worked great with WEP but not WPA and was very sensitive to any changes to my wireless router) and The Linksys Wireless-G card. I highly recomend the Linksys card. It was pretty bullet proof on the two Wireless routers I've used. (linksys and SMC)

If you are using multiple PC's close together, I would recommend a wireless switch. Linksys has a nice one that I use. I use my wired network cards to attach to the switch then the switch connects to the wirless network as needed.
