wrt54g vs the 'speedbooster' version, built in memory regarding hacking?

Obviously those people using ?hacked? firmware that allows for add-ons will appreciate the extra memory space. The CPU remains the same 200MHz as in the v2.0 hardware.



this is a quote off one of the linksys info sites, and I'm thinking about buying one of the linksys. I got the version 1.0 so I can't do any hacks to it...

but to get 'all'? the hacked goodies do I need to get the booster version that comes with more built in memory, so as to be able to store all the hacked addons? Like which ones?

The so call hacking is possible because the firmware is written in Open Source Linux.

Few French (as in France) guys obtained the source and rewrote part of it.

My suspicion is that they did not do it for ?Charity? but hoped to make money of it. However they did not take into consideration the spirit of the Open Source people and got into conflict with Open Source community.

The way it looks at the moment it is a "Crap Shot" it is hard to get precise info. and support.

Many people just too the chance and flash the Router with whatever solid firmware version they amange to obtain. Some of them are successful some end up with a piece of plastic.

Whatever you decide to do make sure that you enough Linux in order to deal with the process and that you have every thing available to install back the original firmware in case you need it.

well i was going to subscribe to the sveasoft site for 1 yr subscription to firmware upgrades etc...

it doesnt seem like such a vague process. the linksys hacks I have heard of for about 1.5yrs i think and it's been a steady growing in popularity kind of thing...
what I dont have a feel for is at this stage now, should I buy the wrt45GS instead of the wrt45G, only because the GS version has 32MB I think of memory, vs 16MB in the G version...


That is to say, after installing the core hacked firmware, then any/all 'addon' hacks, would they all fit in 16MB, or would I have to settle for pickin/choosing what hacked addons I can run on the router due to storage space constraints? Upon which I should consider paying more for the GS version.

However beside the "Mystic" of the Hacking, what are you expecting for the money.

When you take into consideration the price of the Router and the subscription, what do you think that a Hacked Linksys will do for more money that can not be done otherwise?

BTW. The Linksys Speed booster it slowest of the SuperG type of 802.11g.

i'm a fan of the hyperwrt linksys router hacks.

uses a standard linksys wrt54g or wrt54gs. no hardware mods are needed.
just download, and flash the firmware with the hyperwrt code.
then you have access to cool features like boosting the transmit gain on the wireless, shell access, and more diagnostics.

I tried the hyperwrt within the past few weeks. I read reports of someone getting disconnects with it, then I realized why I was getting reports of wireless being connected now popping up occasionally. I believe their firmware isn't stable. I've since installed WRT54G_Wolf_W42_Alchemy_6rc1_by_TheIndividual.zip from http://wrt54g.thermoman.de/ and am happy to stick with it. No more connection popups

Do these have an ssh server built in? I would like to be able to SSH into my network through my router to get to my linux box

Is your data really that important that people will sit outside your house and try to hack your network? Personally I wouldn't worry about it unless you live in an apartment complex with hackers all around you or if this is for a business network.
