wrt54G/Tomato HELP

I have a set-up consisting of:

*Linksys WRT54G Router
*24 dbi wireless grid antenna
*RG-58 50FT cable with N-Male connectors on both sides
*RP N Male to Regular N Female connector (to connect RG-58 to the router)
*ethernet cord
*Tomato Firmware

I am trying to connect to a wireless signal from my parents house, down the street. I don't even know if I have all the right pieces to complete this project.

I have flashed the linksys wrt54g with Tomato, connected the router to the computer with the ethernet cord plugged into the 1 spot; connected the antenna to one of the 2 antenna spots (Do I have to disconnect the other antenna?)...I tried to use a tutorial from wifi planet.com to make the router into a wireless client, but I just can't get it to work. I keep doing the wireless survey and it will not pick up any signals =(

Should I be creating a wireless bridge? A wireless client? What am I missing?

Also, I do not have the antenna mounted outside, yet. It is outside sitting on my deck, pointing in the direction of my previous usb panel antenna...Will that affect getting a signal? I didnt want to mount it until I knew if it was going to work or not.

Please Help!

If anyone can refer me to another post that may help or if anyone can help...Please!

Thanks
Amy

After 50 feet of RG-58, you'll have almost no signal left. A quick google says RG-58 loses about .389 dB/foot. You'll also have losses with each connector. Round numbers, you'll lose about 20dB. If I'm not mistaken, that will eat up all of the wrt54G's radio.

The 24dBi grid is overkill for a 300 foot link, too.

Do you have line of sight? Something like window to window? If you get into external antennas, you have to plan for lightning/proper grounding. You don't want to burn down your house.

What kind of wireless is on the other end?

I cut a 1 ft cable to see if that was the problem and today the signal strength was 8 a few days ago with the 50ft cord the signal strength was 56. i changed the ip and did a wireless survey and only 2 different ip's show up. I have apartments about 300 yards behind me and i dont get any of those signals. I originally bought a usb panel antenna thats 14dbi and i get 4-5 ip's all of which are blocked except my parents which barely works and is always cutting out. I got this new set up with 24dbi and hoped the signal would be better. Anyone else have any tips or can point me in the right direction of some good info.

Well, reading between the lines a bit: I gather you're trying to get to the internet using this wireless link. I'm also now assuming your parents only have a SOHO router, probably with 2dBi rubber duck antennas.

No, really, 50 feet of RG-58 will attenuate your signal to the vanishing point. You're going down the wrong alley with that. A USB? panel antenna? Is it a combo wireless adapter with integrated 14dBi antenna? Even that is overkill for 300 feet, but if your parents just have a router with 2dBi omni antennas, there's your problem, especially if your don't have line of sight.

Answer:

Parent's router configuration? Router model, antenna config?

Line of sight to parent's house? Like, could you look out one of your windows and see your parents waving to you from their window?

One note:

If you are indeed trying to share your parent's internet connection, it will most likely be in violation of their ISP's policies. Just so you know.
