WRT54G on the blink

My WRT54G v3 has been acting up lately, internet speeds have fallen off to a trickle (speeds are fine when connected directly to the modem). Speeds are around 14Mb/s down directly to the modem, 2Mb through the router. I'm using the HyperWRT 2.1b1 firmware.

Anyone know of any troubleshooting tips? Otherwise, I may need some ideas on what to buy for a replacement. Thanks!

Try resetting it as a first step. See if there is a firmware upgrade also. If you're feeling adventurous, that router can be flashed with DD-WRT firmware.

But if it's a hardware problem (something going South inside), no resetting or firmware is going to fix it. These things are made so cheaply these days, that they are really throw-aways.

Just re-read your post in it's entirety. I doubt I told you anything you don't already know. I'll leave the reply for others.

I had a similar problem, what I did was update my firmware fallowed by resetting my router. Worked like a charm.

I have read many times, that the routers become a little sluggish over time. You can reinstall the firmware I believe and it should fix it.

which firmware are you running?
The original firmware from linksys has serious issues with bittorent and saving old connect info so long it overruns the RAM.
Tomato has dog-slow speeds.
DD-WRT (which is what I use) can have issues if not set up meticulously-correctly.
the rest I have no experience with... but as the others have said, restarting the router is very much the first step to troubleshoot.

~edit~
Sorry now I see you are running HyperWRT. tried posting on their forum yet? just a thought.

not necessary and dangerous.

all you need do is reboot. its in the admin options.
you can even set a auto reboot schedule timer there.
i have it every 2 days. it keeps all settings so its fine.

Tried installing the latest Tomato firmware and that didn't seem to help.

I don't use torrents jaqie, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I've restarted it from the admin options a few times....the only thing I haven't done is push the reset button on the back of the router. Will this do something that all else hasn't done? Seems that I remember something a long while back about using the reset button as a last resort, but I could be wrong. That's why I haven't tried that yet.

So there's no chance of bricking it by pressing that reset button, is there?

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

did you set qos too low?
no, you can't brick with a reset, its just a reboot.
