Right now, you can get the WRT54G (I'm guessing it's v7), or the WRT54GL at buy.com for the same price, $39.

I don't plan to replace the firmware. Which one should I get? Does it matter?

Now let see.

As is, does the WRT54 v7 have any advantage over WRT54L? No

As is, does the WRT54L have any advantage over v7? Yes

It has the potential, if necessary, to be flushed with better Firmware, and probably more memory.

So what is the question?

Hint - Potential is money in the Bank whether you use it or Not.

That's what I wanted to know: out of the box, does one router do anything the other doesn't do. (Yes, I know the L could do more if flashed.) Sounds like the answer is "no".

The "L" runs a Linux based firmware while the v5 thru v7 run a VxWorks based firmware/OS.

I dunno but the bad rep it got during the v5 versions is enough for me to stay away from it. Imho, the OP's decision is a no brainer.
