WRT54G is being a real baby and keeps shutting off on me.

StageLeft

No Lifer
By shutting off I mean the lights stay on but it becomes unusable; I lose internet and can't even login to it at 192.168.1.1. I've had it for a couple of days and the first time it did this was within 24 hours. Next time was at around the 30 hour mark. This is from my desktop with XP pro and a network cable straight to the router. The only way I can fix it is to seemingly turn it and my primary modem both off. Now, my cable modem used to lose internet every couple of weeks, and I'd have to cycle power to it, but never this frequent, and in this case it seems to be the router's issue, since I can't even login to it.

Any ideas? 🙂 It's a new router with recent firmware.
Thanks!

I have that router. Actually it's the WRT54GS. It may have shipped with an older firmware.

Maybe it's your wireless signal. Try it wired and see if that works w/o issues.

Anyway, I got so sick of the crappy wireless signals, I punched a hole through the wall, and ran a Cat5 cable. 😉

This problem occurs with a cat5 running straight from my desktop to the router :Q

Sorry, I didn't see where you said...

Maybe you could try to disable the firewall feature (temporarily), and see if this helps the situation. Then you'd at least know if it is a firewall setting or not.

I'd definitely check the firmware and make sure it's fully upgraded. Can even get a 3rd party one like Sveasoft or whatever that other one is. If updating the firmware doesn't help, then it might just be defective. Take it back and get a new one. 🙂

Skoorb, it is a bum unit, return it ASAP.
Even old firmware will not cause that scenario. I have 7 of those running flawlessly, never a problem, both with stock firmware and sveasoft satori.
The only ouside chance is a defect on the computer you are using, and if the problem came with the router, I'd consider that unlikely.

That's what I was leaning twards, but I didn't want to suggest RMA as the first option if it was a just case of user error.

If this continues I'll bring it back 🙂 I sent the rebates today, incl. the UPC code. Is it too late to return it? 🙂

Remember, my cable modem used to do this every once in a while. Could the problems be linked?

I guess I may just have to bring it back!
