WRT54G - How can i set static IP's for each client?

If you mean a static IP within the DHCP range?

The WRT54G as is, it can not do it (I have v4).

With 3rd party firmware it can.

Ahh, that sucks. I thought they all had this feature... Its for a friend, doubt he wants to mess with 3rd party firmware, he's new to this..

The Thibor 15C release has a Static DHCP.

It is easy to flash, and it maintains the Linksys interface. You probably can walk the installtion through the phone.

I can't imagine there's a big advantage to setting static client IPs from the router. You'd have to type in the MAC address for every PC in the network. It'd be faster to turn off the router's DHCP Server and then manually set the IP address at each PC. Plus, if you ever have to change routers, you don't have to do it all over again.

Yap it is very true concerning medium to big network managed and or maintained by pros.

When you have a small peer-to-peer network, it is much easier to debug and maintain mixed system (Wired and Wireless) with the DHCP On. For remote control, printing, NAS, and similar purposes you want to have some computers obtaining the same IP. ?Fix? IP within the DHCP makes life much pleasurable under such circumstances, making check marks to maintain the same IP in the DHCP list for 6 computer takes 30 seconds.

Bulldozer and small sedans are Not usually maintained by the same mechanics under the same rules.

There's also the option of leaving the router's DHCP Server "On", but moving its IP lease Range to a high value so that it'll only give out a handful of leases, set to expire in a day. That way, "Visitors" will get a temporary IP that wll go away quickly once they disconnect. But there's lots of room for statically-set IP addresses in the range below the DHCP leased addresses.
