WRT54G Bittorrent/P2P fix?

Any good? Should I use something else?

Basically, my problem is that the router dies every few days because it gets overloaded (a known problem with linksys routers + P2P progs). So, what fixes have you guys done to your linksys routers? Can you please tell me what you've done?

I was told to add some startup scripts, but the router seems to still die even after I put those in.

define "die". What is the exact symptom? Does your computer give the the message 'limited connectivity" and your IP is either 0.0.0.0 or the 169.254.whatever that MS runs home to?
My experience has not been one of actual router failure, but failure of the DHCP server after a while.
If you assign static IPs the computers, it becomes a moot point.

Connection crawls. TAkes 20 min to load webpages or something.. AIM works, BT continues to download, sometimes speeds take a hit, but i think usually its ok

bottom line is cant laod webpages, can't play games...

If I try to connect to the router, can't do it, if I do, it takes like 5 min for each link to load... Router is overloaded.

There is a reason for this and its because Linksys routers log connections for 5 days and keep that info. This is stated in Wikipedia and uTorrent's FAQ, and so for BT or other P2p connections, thats a lot of connections, and it will overload the router... hence hte power cycle fixes things...

I know there are ways to fix this though, so I'm wondering how this can be done (and no its not as simple as turning off a log, cuz this is a different thing)

Stop using such an underpowered POS if you're going to throw a lot of connections at it?

nweaver and n0cmonkey: both of you are capable of much more helpful responses.

DLeRium, it sounds like you are actually maxing out your upload capacity. Try a client that lets you configure that, and set the allowed upload capacity to less than your actual capacity. You also might try third-party firmware that lets you prioritize some traffic (e.g., regular web/HTTP) over the rest.

Well n0c's was much better then nweaver's... P2P != piracy guys.

I use dd-WRT (easy setup) and OpenWRT (infinitely more configurable) - they handle the occasional torrent well, 2 or 3 at once really slow it to a crawl, but who needs to download 3 torrents simultaniously? If you do things like this you really will want a better router.

I use a WRT54G v4. I have downloaded a half dozen torrents over the wireless connection, and been able to browse just fine. If you're doing more than that, you probably want something beefier.

I figure everyone already knows to cap your upload already, so that's why I didn't toss that out. :p

I use Alchemy 1.0 final on my WRT54G v1.1 without any problems! I've downloaded...a lot...via torrents over the past year or so after having the firmware. I'm connected to the router via wireless (WPA-PSK/TKIP+AES/900s recycle time) and it is just, simply put, flawless! No reboots, no lock-ups, no slow-downs.

I'd suggest trying this firmware if you can put it on your version of your router.

I had the same exact problem as you (with the stock firmware), I have the v4 router. The HyperWRT Thibor completely solved the problem, not to mention now I can use static DHCP for the machine with all the connections and manually clear the upnp entires without reseting the damned thing. I cannot recommend this enough, the router is so much faster and more reliable now.
