WRT54G as an access point

How to I turn a WRT54G into an access point? Would I have to install DD-WRT or Tomato firmware? If so (or if not), could anyone post a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to do it?

Thanks!

EDIT: I think the router might be bricked as well. My friend (it's not my router) tried to upgrade the firmware wirelessly (stupid, I know), and it stopped mid-upgrade. Now the router is basically bricked (though he's going to try connecting to it through ethernet, which he hasn't yet). Are there any ways to unbrick these routers? It's a v4.

For when you get one that works:

1. Connect with ethernet, completely separate from other networks. Dhcp should work but usually you can choose like 192.168.1.100 in /24 or something like that. The thing will probably be 192.168.1.1 but the default gateway you pick up from dhcp can tell you for sure.
2. The default ip address it picked will probably conflict another router on your network (assuming you already have something similar in place to connect to the internet). Ditto for the dhcp. Change it to a different ip address on the same subnet, one that you know is free. At this point you will lose contact with the router and will have to change what you're connecting to. Next, turn off the dhcp. If you're using dhcp to connect, you'll have to assign a static ip to continue.
3. Now connect again and work out your wireless settings (encryption and such). You should be able to try out a wireless connection now. All you'll be able to do until you connect to your main network is ping the router or your wired connection and you'll have to do static ip at first.
4. Connect one of the lan ports (not wan) to the rest of your wired network and off you go. You should be able to acquire dhcp leases through wireless.

Edit: Step #1 should actually read: stfa (http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2053727&enterthread=y )
