I do that all the time. It's like whenever somebody hits me with random small talk, my own random number generator kicks in and puts together a response.

That's better than what I used to do. I would arrive at work at 6:30 or so, and already be doing five things at once, when my boss walked in around 8:00...

Boss: "Morning!"
Me: <didn't even notice he arrived>
Boss: "GOOD MORNING!"
Me: <still buried in work, didn't even notice he arrived... ESPECIALLY when i'm on the phone and he did this>
Boss: <waves hand in front of my face> "Good Morning, Drew, are you going to respond?"
Me: "Oh... Morning, Brad."

I'm not a morning person at all. I used to go to breakfast with my adopted dad every morning (M-F)... We'd both wake up around 4:45... pass each other in the hallway, shower in our respective bathrooms, get dressed, etc., grab a glass of orange juice or milk together, walk out through the garage together, get in our cars, and drive to Bob Evans.... and only THEN would we usually say "G'Morning", "Hello", or whatever. 😉 It was nice.
