Think about it, it's such a common saying, yet when referring to something bad happening to a person, I think it would make more literal sense to say "Wrong place at the right time" or even "Right place at the wrong time".

Sincerely,

Bill "Grammar Nazi" Gates

P.S. - If you argue my point, I will tell Al Gore to turn off the Internet.

I see what you're saying...but I think the phrase is more trying to say something like "bad place at a bad time."

Nah, wrong place at the wrong time is correct. It's something BAD that happens, so say you get mugged in a bad neighborhood....not only are you in the wrong place (the bad neighborhood) but you're there at the wrong time (when the mugger was around).

If you say "wrong place at the right time", the right time part implies that the happening was positive. Same with "right place at the wrong time". If something bad happens, then EVERYTHING was wrong about it, and you're up sh!t's creek without a paddle.

I guess I'll have to take my chances with Gore wielding the ban hammer.

Al Gore can do it, after all he said he created it right? ;)

Watch out for AL!

I agree that it means more like bad place at bad time.

I agree

The implication is that in order for the 'bad thing' to have happened, the person had to be in the 'wrong' place at the 'wrong' time.

p(mugging) = p (alley) x p (2 am)

p(sucked into another committee) = p (watercooler) x p (when boss walked by)

"The wages of sin,
is death."

I don't remember this formula in my stats or orginizational structure classes. Maybe it's time to crack those books open, it could explain a lot of my meetings this week.

Yeah, but let's say something bad was "GOING" to happen... For example, I watched an "Amazing Sports Videos" type show on Discovery Channel last night. Some biker was riding along and got nailed right on the top of the head with a home run - all captured on tape. Another dude got his car window shattered by a home run blast.

In these cases, the people were in the wrong place at the right time (for the incident to happen). If they were in the wrong place (where the baseball was going to land) at the wrong time (for the incident to happen), they would not have been hit and would not have been on TV.

Its kind of like the idiots who say 'I could car less about it.' when they mean that they dont care whatsoever, when infact and some people do say it right should be 'I couldn't care less about it.'

Just stupid little things that people notice dont work right together but say it anyway....
