Wrong Memory Fried Motherboard???

Hey guys...I got some memory that wasn't advertised to be compatible with my 440 BX MB (I think it's the Asus BH6). I got it cheap, and I figured if it didn't work I would sell it, no big deal. Well, I tried it in my machine today. The MB didn't post. OK, I guess I'll just sell the RAM. However, now my MB won't post AT ALL! With the old RAM, without any RAM at all, it won't post. The cpu cooling fan doesn't come on either. It's very dead...:/ I mean, no beeps, no nothin. So is it possible that using the wrong RAM could actually fry my motherboard?!?! That seems kind of absurd to me...

the wrong memory will indeed cause your mobo to not post, BUT it should never fry it.
you said your CPU fan WASNT spinning, that means either your PS or mobo itself is dead.
I highly doubt the ram fried it.

Well, the PS isn't dead...all the other peripherals come on...the ONLY thing I did was put in teh new RAM and take it out..I didn't touch ANYTHING else. :/

Did you accidentally knock the power connector to the motherboard out of place? The CPU fan is usually powered off the mobo, all the drives and other stuff (except obviously AGP, PCI, and ISA cards) are not.

If the RAM you tried physically fit in the slot, then it would not have fried the motherboard.
 
Yes, the motherboard has power. The PCI ethernet card's lights are coming on. One thing that did happen was the memory was put in backwards and computer turned on. However, due to the notches in the DIMM not being in the right places I dont think the DIMM was in the slot all the way.

Hmm...well, it looks like it could be an AGP problem? If I plug in my AGP vid card it doesn't work...if I unplug the vid card it works. Any ideas?

The system memory and the AGP memory are on a "shared" type of connection. If you did put the memory in backwards and added power you may have done something to the video card or the board itself. It doesn't sound like ESD. If you pull the video card and the system memory does the system beep at power on? If it does than you likely did not blow the board. Good luck in your situation.
 
Looks like I fried the AGP bus. A) with no vid card, it still doesn't beep. B) I tried another AGP card today and the same thing happened (fans didn't come on). I've tried resetting the CMOS. Time to upgrade this Celeron 300a. Oh well. 🙂
