I just got my new system up and running and have a couple of questions.

System Specs:
MSI K7T266 Pro2 W/latest bios
AMD T-bird 1ghz @1ghz
512mb Pc2100 DDR
Western Dig 60 gig 7200 rpm
Soundblaster live 5.1
MSI nvidia geforce2 mx400
300 watt ps
Windows XP pro
NTFS

1.) My new hard drive is a 60 gig but when I was formatting it AND once the OS was loaded the size of the drive is reported at 55 gig and some change. There is oly 1 partition which, of course, is the C drive. What si going on there? Is there something wrong with my HDD?

2.) I haven't used the computer very much because I have had too much to do but ........twice no, in the middle of using it, it has re-booted all by itself. The first time it was on for about 5 minutes and i was play RTCW and poof! it just re-booted. The second time the computer was on for about 2 hours and I was surfing the forums and it happened again. Both times there were no error messages but then the next time I re-booted an error came up saying that a severe error has occured and it asked if i want to send a report to M$. Anyone hear of this before? There was no mention of a specific problem. I was using the software that cam with the MOBO that monitors the system fans and temp at the time. It said that the cpu temp was 99°F and the system temp was 96°F. So I didn't figure it was a heat problem.

HELP HELP HELP PLEASE! All I want is a stable system!

You need to look at the Event Log to get some clues to your problem.
Also uncheck the "Automatic Re-Boot" option in the Startup & Recovery window.

Let us know what the log says.

your hard drive is going to "lose space" after being formatted. 55 and some change sounds about right for a 60gig hard drive. my 20gb actually showed up as 19.0gb. my two WD 60gbs now show up as 56.7gb (i think thats the exact number, if not its really close)

The way the manufacturers report the bytes on hard drives is greater than how the computer actually shows it. There is some technical explanation for it, which I don't recall. But it happens to everyone. But the first time, you're pissed :disgust:

Your hard drive specs sounds fine, minendo said it correct it takes a specific amount to format, and some hd companies round up or down anyway.

Are you using generic ddr ram? if so this could be the cause of your problem with the reboots, or you could try a bios update.

Another thing is that your cpu temp and your case temp are really close almost to close, are you sure that mbm has the right temp sensors on? Most peoples tbirds run about 20 degrees celcius difference between system and cpu. Your system temp should be around room temp and your cpu should be hotter. When it reboots next time go into your bios and look at your temps in there, still not the most accurate device. Thats I think 37C for cpu and 35C for case. When it should be closer, in most cases, to 45 cpu 30 case.
