Wrong decision?

I bought a new VAIO laptop today. 4gb of RAM, 2.4ghz Intel 2 Duo but the graphics card is a Radeon 3400 256MB. I was going to get an HP instead that has a GeForce 9600M 512MB but it is only 2.0GHz. Should I take this VAIO back and wait for the HP to come in? How much difference in graphics performance am I going to notice?

The HP's that have the 9600M GT are DDR2 based, which is still decent, but isn't what I had hoped for. Regardless, the HP will be about twice as fast as the Sony in gaming... Personally, I would return it and go with the HP, find some coupon codes and trick it out the way you want.

This is all assuming your size is 15.4" or smaler... If you are actually looking at a 17"+ I'd be seriously looking into the Gateway FX7811 (I think that is the model)...

Its a 17 inch monitor. What I'm thinking about is the fact that I'm going to be losing 400MHz of processor speed. Would you still switch?

If gaming is high on your priority list, I would definitely trade the 400Mhz in CPU speed for a much faster GPU.

Going from 2.0 to 2.4 is only 20% increase, but moving from a 3400 Mobility to a 9600M GT DDR2 is at the very least, a 100% increase. But since you are already in the 17" range, I would consider looking at different laptops if gaming is going to be a priority for you.
