In my recent band (broke up about a month ago...suxx) our singer preferred us to write the music to the song, let her take it home and listen/practice with it till she came up with melodies/lyrics. The songs turned out awesome. Seemed to work. Just pissed the band broke up....what a waste.

I'm not really a musician, but I'm when I'm trying to write songs, I try to think of the lyrics and melody that would match those lyrics. It's a byeatch trying to put a melody into a song later. Besides, you would know how you would want each sentence to sound. I guess it's like a building, you build each story at a time. I don't know if that made any sense, but, that's what I think.

Usually, I come up with the music and the lyrics at the same time. It all plays off of the mood I'm in at the moment.

I normally write the music first. I never really wrote any lyrics, I would tell our singer what I was thinking about when I wrote it, though.

I think it can work either way. Sometimes the lyrcis inspire the music and sometimes the music inspire the lyrics. Also nothing is set in stone. Lyrcis can be modified to "fit" the music, music can be modified to "fit" the lyrics and they both can be modified to "fit" the song. Creating a song is a dynamic, evolving process. And there is no wrong way to do it, just different ways.

Neil Peart, who I'm sure you are familiar with, writes the lyrics to all of Rush's songs.
