Writing Online Checks?

I'm about to order some stuff from a company and they accept online checks, is this a safe method to pay with? I've never done this before. Heres the instructions that the company gave to paying with a check.

To pay by check, fill out the following information and submit. We have check imaging capabilities that will enable us to print a "Draft Copy" of your check. Then just void the check in your checkbook, and you will receive the "Draft Copy" back with your monthly bank statement.

Will I still have to wait for the check to clear?

BE CAREFUL!!!

once somebody has your checking account # and the routing number, they can CLEAN OUT YOUR BANK ACCOUNT!

only do this if its a very reputible company that you know of and have dealt with before

Really? Well, doesn't every personal check you ever write have the acct. # and routing # at the bottom?

Don't do it. I only pay my CC bills with online checks. Because I trust American Express.
The rest I pay with Amex, sometimes my debit card. But those have fraud protection.

Good point. That's why I don't like these online checks at all. Someone doesn't even need to steal your checkbook.

i found this

* Don't give your checking account number to people you don't know. The numbers at the bottom of your checks and deposit slips -- called MICR numbers -- identify not only the routing number of your bank but also your account number.

* Reveal checking account information only to vendors you know to be reputable.

Is there anyway to do a background check on a company to see if how long they've been in business and if they have any complaints against them?

Is it a good or bad thing that the company isn't listed on the BBB site?

Also can I use a debit card like a credit card to order things online? My debit card has a Visa logo on it if that helps.

yes debit card = basically credit card linked to your checking accnt

yes, you can use it. But make sure that bank has some sort of fraud protection. Otherwise it's better to get a separate credit card and use that and pay it off at the end of the month.

doesn't that information get let out every time you write a personal check though?

EDIT: well, you'd probably have to sign some extra documents giving them full access to your account or something, like that nigerian money scam that got busted recently
