Firstly to the mods - I tried to look at all the topics and find the appropriate forum for this, and I'm stumped on it. It's not really a SFF question though it's probably about tablet pc's, it's not really an apple question while it's likely related to the iPad, and perhaps 3 other categories it has it's feet in. What I mean is that if this is in the wrong forum, I do apologize and hope you would be kind enough to re-locate it.

Onto the question:

I've been working on a novel for some time and I realize (I've written pen and paper) that it will need to become digital at some time. I also realize the obvious suggestion is a keyboard but my point in this post is that I'd prefer to stick with a handwritten input method instead of keys - it really is only a preference and I'm not here to debate efficiency which favors the keyboard.

I've been looking at Tablet PCs and they seem an interesting technology but I know little about them and many of them exceed what I'd like to spend (roughly 500-1000). I've also looked at the iPad and understand there are now some apps available for handwriting recognition - but they need to work well enough to write an 800-page book; so, do they?

Any first-hand experience would be most appreciated and I'm glad for anyone willing to spare a little time in answering.

Regards,
- Chaz
