Wrist Watches... What's nice; what's not?

I see athletes a lot of times wearing a wrist watch and I'm "what the hell are you doing competing with that thing on your arm???" For instance, a golfer. It has a strap, it has mass, it can't possibly help you, it's only detrimental to your peak performance.

I have a couple wrist watches but haven't worn one for quite a few years even for a second. If I need to know the time, I carry one of my cell phones, and those are bloody accurate. I've never encountered a wrist watch that's accurate.

Carrying a phone just to tell the time ? Sure I can see that, well not really. But I have a problem with time as recorded here and don't know how long I'll be able to report it. I set the clocks in the oven and the microwave to the same time months ago but recently the times have increasingly diverged. I have a sense that my universe is expanding somehow in two directions. Am I now in a twilight zone ? Who knows- I fear I may be popped out in some shit hole like Philadelphia or Vancouver.

A quartz watch is about as accurate as you can possibly get as long as you set it correctly to start. A lot of athletes are probably not wearing watches but may be wearing activity trackers like the Whoop that monitor vitals.

i'm still wearing the same type of watch i got for a birthday present 30 years ago

people make fun of it sometimes but i ain't changing it

When I "recalibrate" my clocks (i.e. correct their diverging from accurate time) I use android app Atomic Clock, which shows H:M:S, go around the house and get everything right. All at DST/PST changeover 2x/year and occasionally in between. Yeah, I don't always carry my cell phone, generally only when I think I may need it. If I want to know the time (i.e. going to appointment) I'll take one.

I thought you didn't talk to people IRL?

well mainly its guys at work who would see it, and joke about the scratched up face and slightly busted wrist strap

i could've told them that i don't buy a "nice" watch because i'm saving %75 of my income so i can retire from this miserable career ASAP

but that probably wouldn't go over well, so i just laughed at their joke

What's nicest to me = NOTHING on my wrist. 😉

I could see wearing an activity-tracker when working out especially for a pro athlete but otherwise all a watch is far as I'm concerned is a nuisance.
