Wrestlings with OS's

I have an old HP xe783 Wally special and I just installed a new hard drive and cdrw. I tried using the manufacturer's disks to load Windows ME, and it wouldn't fly (I/O error). I'm hoping I can install XP, then revert back to ME. Is that a dream?
The reason for reverting is that I have a sale for the computer, and it's probably a good idea to have the original licensed software and OS on it, just in case the folks care.
I'm still not able to get xp installed, the system keeps hanging when it reboots.
Any strategies would be hugely appreciated!!!

I solved the hang on reboot by pulling the cd in between setup and reboot. Once the setup resumed, I dropped the cd back in. Setup is on it's way again.
Once this thing is loaded up, I'll drop in the factory cd's and see what happens.
