My beautiful 2006 330i with Sports Package was wrecked about a month ago, totally my fault, hydroplaned in the rain right into oncoming traffic. If you guys are curious, I can give more details about the accident later.

Anyways, it had 180k miles on it which was was well onto 200k miles. I really wanted to drive this car to the ground to determine long term reliability of an e90 with the N52 engine.

Fast forward to today and I'm older and I ended up getting a used 2013 ActiveHybrid 5 with 36k miles on it. It has an additional 3 year 66k mile warranty and I mainly drive it to work and back.
It's got the sports package, dynamic handling, hud display, premium package, cold weather package, convenience package, power shades, power trunk, soft close doors, 4 zone climate control, metallic white exterior with tan interior.

I'll add some pics after I get my windows tinted.

Anyways, I noticed BMW no longer sells the activehybrids. Not sure if that's a bad sign. The power is good, it pairs the N55 with a 55hp electric motor. So far I've been getting 28 combined MPG after my first full fill-up.

I think 180k is well into long term reliability land. How was it?

Aside from normal wear and tear items such as the electric water pump, oils, brakes, tires, etc etc, there was the following issues

1. Oil leak around the valve cover gasket. I did this work myself and also changed the oil filter housing gasket as a preventative measure. Taking the valve cover off and doing the work was very easy but putting the cover back on took... several hours.
2. Aftermarket LED Angel lights burned out. Replaced with new LEDs.
3. Failed coil pack on cylinder 2, this lead to the car running very rough. Hooked up the ODB and gave a coil pack cylinder 2 error, replaced the coil back with a $30 part that took about 10 minutes.
4. Fading exterior chrome window trim (part of the sports package). I did nothing about this.
5. Transmission had a slight hesitation going from 4th to 5th gear. Was not noticeable in sports mode so I ignored it. I was planning on changing the shift solenoids when I changed my transmission pan and filter at 200k miles.

Agreed
I'd like to know what type of miles were put on the car.

It was a mix of 60% highway and 40% city driving. I never tracked the car but once It fell out of warranty at 100k miles, I put in some aftermarket shocks and added some LED lights. I usually drove it pretty aggressively but towards the last few years, I drove normal with a few high speed passing per month.

they don't sel the active hybrid 3 anymore because it really didnt save that much gas. you can get a 330e or something now, so its not like BMW abandoned hybrids. they just abandoned "performance hybrids" with the big engine for a while. I think honda did a performance accord v6 hybrid too and that also sold pretty terribly

They make an X5 hybrid too but it makes absolutely zero sense. It costs thousands of dollars more than the regular X5 but returns only a couple mpg more fuel economy.

Why not buy a KIA, man?

Haha coincidentally, when I joined Anandtech back in 2001, it was purely for the garage forums and at the time I was driving a KIA Sportage and thus my name.

I just did my first full fill-up, 27.2 mpg (364 miles / 13.38 gallons). I don't know anybody who has an f10 535i so not sure how good this is compared the the same car minus the electric boost and 300 lbs. And wtf, every tint place is closed until the new years? Finding one is harder than I thought.

Did it look like failure 1 contributed to failure 3?

Nah, the valve cover gasket line is below the coil pack entry point. If it were cylinder 3 or 4, it could have been due to a leak from the vanos motor gasket but it wasn't. A quick test to check if spark, coil pack or connection issue was to just swap out coil pack on cylinder 1 and 2. OBD reading then said coil pack issue cylinder 1 so I knew it was just the coil pack.

ive had the f10 535i and the active5 as loaner cars.

i think the only really noticeable thing is the active5 from what i remember, felt faster and was quieter when accelerating from a stop because it was using the electric motor. not even really sure it was faster overall up to say 70mph or anything, but from say 0-20mph it felt faster

It is a strange sensation to have that immediate torque even when I am being very light on the throttle. It feels like it makes up for the engine torque not kicking in until 1500 RPM. I do have a concern, at this point I have yet to have my engine actually warm up to operating temps driving 15 miles one way to work. The engine shuts off so many times it never reaches more than a quarter of the scale. Not sure how that is going to affect the reliability of the engine.
