WPA-PSK TKIP on a PSP is not working. Grr?

I just entered my WPA-PSK into a PSP for the third time. This is a long key with lots of funky characters, etc. This key works fine on notebooks. The PSP works fine without encryption. The router has the MAC address of the PSP allowed. The problem is that when the PSP tries to access the router, it fails when the key checking process happens. (The router is allowed to operate in B mode for the PSP.) I've made certain that the key in the PSP is the same as all the other computers and the router.

Are there any known quirks with Sony's implementation of TKIP keys?

Mine only has WEP. I guess I have really old firmware.

If yours only has WEP, it'll never fly with WPA.

Good Luck

Firmware v2.0 added WPA-PSK (TKIP only) support. Unfortunately I haven't tested it on my network.

Yeah, I have the new firmware. That's the only way I could have added the TKIP entry. ;) It's just a great mystery as to why only the PSP, with the same key as the other wireless devices, won't connect. If I turn off encryption, it will work just fine. I didn't really want to try a different key because the one I chose is quite...eclectic. And entering a code like that on the PSP takes a while. haha

Well, if it's any consolation, I updated to Firmware 2.0 today, and I don't get a connection either.

I use a Cisco 1231ag at home (IOS 12.3(7)JA). I set the freqs to "Default" (802.11b speeds required, 802.11g speeds enabled). I tried long and short preambles, long and short slot times, turned off CCX (Cisco Extensions), verified the PSK, verified the SSID, changed the frag value ... all of the usual drill.

The Sony PSP site "Troubleshooting tips" said to make sure the PSP power saving mode was off (did that, no help).

At this point, I'm going to guess that Sony's WPA is not 100% yet. I've used my Cisco AP with client adapters from 3com, Linksys, Nortel, D-Link, Broadcom, Intel ... never had a problem (except some Intel / Centrino drivers will throw MIC error that shut down the AP unless you turn that feature off on the AP).

Ah well ...

No big deal.

FWIW

Yay! I'm not the only one! haha I saw that the PSP now had a Power Saving mode for the wireless antenna, but I left it On. It appears to do the same thing as the switch on the left side of the PSP, just through software. My PSP will go in circles when trying to connect. Attempting to Connect, then Authenticating, and then starts over.

The good thing is that the network connectivity doesn't really hinder the usefulness of the PSP. It just kills one of the features of the unit.

The next time they put out a firmware update (and if it doesn't break something else or fail to follow the standard) I'll turn off WPA for a moment to get that firmware.
