The endgame has begun ? not only with Iraq, but also with America?s friends. By escalating his threats against Baghdad and insisting he is unwilling to participate in ?the rerun of a bad movie,? President Bush is serving notice on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein that the time for prevarication is over. More immediately, Bush is also signaling U.S. allies that he is prepared to go to war with Iraq without their approval.

So more or less, Bush has said we're going to war, we can do with with the UN and our "friends", or we'll do what's required ourselves and the world can thank us later for it.

Saddam is an idiot if he doesn't give up his weapons now. They won't do him any good against us in battle, so why keep them?

the US will get plenty of support, with our without UN approval -- if the UN fails to act, then I agree with Bushy that the UN become irrelevant. 12yrs is long enough.

Senate approves Iraq war resolution

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In a major victory for the White House, the Senate early Friday voted 77-23 to authorize President Bush to attack Iraq if Saddam Hussein refuses to give up weapons of mass destruction as required by U.N. resolutions.

Hours earlier, the House approved an identical resolution, 296-133.
...
The resolution requires Bush to declare to Congress either before or within 48 hours after beginning military action that diplomatic efforts to enforce the U.N. resolutions have failed.

Bush also must certify that action against Iraq would not hinder efforts to pursue the al Qaeda terrorist network that attacked New York and Washington last year. And it requires the administration to report to Congress on the progress of any war with Iraq every 60 days.

The measure passed the Senate and House by wider margins than the 1991 resolution that empowered the current president's father to go to war to expel Iraq from Kuwait. That measure passed 250-183 in the House and 52-47 in the Senate.
_______

We are already past that stage.

I think if the US has to go in alone, we keep the friggin' oil for ourselves. That'll teach those whiny French...

And the Germans! I thought they had some balls, what the heck happened to make them to so damned... wimpy?

The Germans handed out a few ass kickings, too.

Very true. Indeed, they almost won, but in the end...

I think that we are all agreed that France played the role of the red-headed step-child in WWII.

Heh.. well, France (stupidly) failed to understand the importance of mobility in the modern battlefield, and put all of their eggs into the flimsy basket of the Maginot line. Result: Germany does an end-run around France's fixed fortifications, and France quickly falls to Hitler's control. Oops.

Hehe...the best line I've seen to summarize that is "The Germans coming through Belgium? Again? Never!" ;)
