Wow, just seemed like yesterday that I was in here posting my "First Build Is done!" thread a year ago. Since then, I haven't really stayed up-to-date with the hardware world though.

Anyways, it's rather funny to come back and see all this hype about quad core CPU's, etc, when it just seemed like yesterday that everyone was wanting to get their hands on the first AMD dual-cores (Toledo or something like that).

So whatever happened to AM2? Did Intel's "Conroe" win this year's CPU arms race?

I admit, this was somewhat of a pointless thread, but I miss posting around here. 🙁

with 1660 posts, you can't miss it too much!

anyway, in short.

AM2 was a bit underwhelming (just s939 processors with DDR2 memory, little performance gain)
Conroe is substantially better than AM2 and s939 (about 20% clock-for-clock, and the architechture has a higher operating ceiling (seems to be around the mid to high 3 ghz range)

Quad-core is right around the corner, although i am still not convinced that it is truly necessary for home users...

Dual core, quad core, feh... Not worth bothering yourself over. Heck, I use a Duron 1600 and it's plenty for what I do.
