Alright ill make this short as can be.

1. Tried to upload an image from a Dell SX280 to a server (need to be able to boot from the CD)
2. Was able to see the CD-Rom in windows but not the bios
3. updated the bios to the latest version and had the same issue (bios said no device present)
4. called dell to see if i was missing something in the bios and spent 2 hours on the phone with them to be told they would have engineers look at it.
5. The Senor tech support rep from dell wanted express service tags from PC's having this issue (there were several)
6. A few hours after i send the email i get this response.

Description

Detailed information about the item

the SX280's dvd drives aren't showing up in the BIOS but they will show up and work in windows for this customers 35 machines. we have tried BIOS rev's A00 A02 A04 and A05. Customer needs to get the drives to show up in the BIOS so that he can install the schools image. We replaced 1 motherboard and it arrived with rev A03 and worked properly, the customer was able to boot to the dvd drive and it showed up in BIOS. we flashed this computer to a different rev and the drive no longer showed up in the BIOS. The customer is now asking for a copy of A03 because it has been pulled from our web site. Customer Status:

Customer issue resolved using the following recommendation from technical support: pull the drive out of the computer. Flash the BIOS to the latest rev. then put the drive back in, go into the BIOS and turn all the light on the keyboard on. Then Press ALT+E then ALT+F then ALT+B, the alt b combo should restart the
computer. Then go back into the BIOS and see if the drive is recognized.

Okay...wtf, who configures this crap ^_^

Anyhow about to try that and see if it works, if not im going to see if i can find the A03 bios.

Well this is the explaination he gave me...

I?m shocked too?but those keystrokes are meant to clear the nvram, reset bios to factory defaults, etc.

And if you're wondering the A03 bios are gone :(

I think every one of our SX280s have failed due to heat in the past month or so. We ended up removing the back cover off of them and that fixed the problem, but thats still not a good solution, IMHO.
