I've always been used to Arco gas being less than Chevron, but this week, for the first time in my life, Arco is more expensive than the Chevron across the street, by a whopping 7cents per gallon for 87 octane, 12 cents for 89 and 14 cents for 91.

The funny thing was, people were still buying arco gas. WTF?

This probably belongs in HD.

LOL! That's funny. I don't think I've ever seen Arco any higher then other mainstream companies.

minendo, Arco is the cheapest "chain" gas you can get in SoCal. Its pisswater tho. I've always noticed a difference when running that compared say 76 or Shell.

Ahh Ok. We don't have many major gas chains out here so I didn't know if it was some major chain I had never heard of.

Bah, nonsense.

Every state has quite stringent gasoline testing practices. They are NOT selling sub-par gasoline. It is all in your head.

Arco is supplied by BP/Amoco.

This line of thought is no better than thinking that Plus or Premium is somehow better(quality) than Regular.

With 10.6:1 compression Premium is better then Regular😉

So are you telling me I can put normal gas in my Civc Si even though the manual specifically stated 91 or higher should be used ??
I would love to put normal 87 in mu car if it was feasible.

Yes you can mr ricer kid! Your Si does not need premium.

Yeah ask that turbovan guy!

i think what eli was trying to say is that there is very little difference from brand to brand of the same octane, due to regulatory laws. there is a difference, however, between regular, mid-grade, and premium

with most gasoline chains I would agree, but me and multiple friends have calculated our mileage under different brands, and Arco is the only brand that really kills it. My friend with the Pontiac Sunbird (which sucks) noticed the biggest difference. His car was getting incredibly bad mileage with Arco, like 18-20 mpg. He switched to Shell, and instantly got ~24 mpg. IMHO that's still awful mileage for a 4 banger, but it's a huge leap up. Similarly, my Celica always ran worse with Arco.

Part of it could be that they use a lot more ethanol than many other brands.

I was born and raised that you only put one brand of gasoline into a car and never mess with it.... seeing as every gas company has their own different blends of detergents and additaves to go into the gas...

It's not that big a deal to me, so I simply always use sunnoco

His compression is at least 10:1. If he doesn't want the power sucked away via the computer retarding the timing he'll stick to premium😉

If your car says get regular, then get regular. There will be no benefit using premium when only regular is required. Different engines need different things.....

Absolutely not.

If your car requires Plus or Premium, then you must use Plus or Premium.

But there are many people that believe that Premium is actually premium, as in it is somehow higher quality than Regular.

The only difference is the octane rating. If your engine requires Regular and you fill it up with Premium, you are throwing money away.

Marketing like Shell's "V-Power" is what causes sh!t like this.

Tests like that aren't really very reliable though, because.. for example, maybe there was a head wind on the trip there, and a tail wind on the way back. Or maybe the trip there is a slight uphill grade, and you don't really notice it. etc, etc.

If it is true that BP/Amoco uses more Ethanol than most, that could definately explain a MPG discrepency, though. I'll have to look into that when I get back.

AFAIK, the standard across the board is 10%, though.

There is no difference between 87 ocatane gas from Arco or Chevron other than the company specific supplements.
Just buy it from where ever you want. If you have a high compression engine - get high octane gas otherwise you will get pinging and in the long run your engine will not last THAT long(talking beyond 100K miles)

I hate Arco gas as well. My tank always ran out a good 50 miles earlier than Chevron. After filling with Arco a number of times and switching back to Chevron, the car ran better. And, no, it wasn't all in my head.

Been using Mobil 93 for only for years now. Ever since I put the new heads on the stang that raised compression....

🙂
