Wow, you get less wet walking in the rain than running

Makes sense... if you're walking you're going slow enough so that most of the rain just hits the top of you... if you're running, you're running into the drops that are in front of you as well as what's falling on top of you.
 
yeah but it still makes sense to run if you don't want to get wet because you'll be out in the rain for a shorter amount of time.

They acknowledged there was a competing study done that had opposite results. The very study listed at the bottom of Straight Dope's page, IIRC. However, Mythbusters repeated their study over and over again with the same results: Running got one wetter than walking. The guy who did the other test talked with Mythbusters and expressed confusion over just why each got the opposite results. Both agreed more would should be done... if only it was really worth it. 🙂
 
I think it'd be obvious......look at your car's windshield when stopped and then moving. It'll be very much wetter when moving.....same thing on a motorcycle or bicycle. You get a lot wetter when moving fast vs. moving at a walking pace. As was said before, you are running into the raindrops in front of you.
 
I was actually thinking about this a while ago, for some reason. I really think it depends on the strength of the rain. In light rain, it would make sense to walk, because the rain isn't everywhere around you. But in heavy rain, you're going to be walking into more rain at whatever pace you're at, and it would probably be wise to just run to get out of the rain as quickly as possible 😛
 
personally, i dont like it when my scalp/hair gets wet (especially with hair gel). sure your body may get more wet when you run but wet and soppy scalp/hair is worse than wet clothes for me. id rather run and avoid all the vertical drops that fall on my head.
 
I dont think its that obvious... If the rain is falling at the same rate you either walk and stay out longer or you run and stay out shorter. Its not like anything you guys have said can prove either side w/o further study....

For those saying when you run or drive see how much you get in front of you? Well... next time your flying down the highway in the rain look out your BACK windshield and see how much rain is there ....
