XFX always puts cheap heatsinks on their products in my experience.

I had a 6600GT with a cooler that looked just like that and it fried while I was playing AOE3.

I buy eVGA now.

Wow my 6800xt had the same cooler. Of course the 6800 put out less heat.

Of course, in my experience, XFX cards cost less than other brands most of the times and they do have the warranty that covers replacing the cooler, so I see it as breaking even.

To be fair, the 8800GT and 6600GT are bargain cards. The last three XFX cards I bought (the 9800GX2, 7950GX2, and the 6800GT) all had reference cooling designs and came with a double lifetime warranty.

XFX is a tier one NVIDIA OEM, and I obviously don't hesitate to buy their products.

They usually have some superclocked models that kick ass- the XXX 7950GX2 was the equivalent of a 7900GTX SLi rig.

Of course, for 8800GTs, I'd prefer the MSI model with the 4 heat pipes myself as well.

Slap an even smaller cooler on it. Bravo. Just Bravo.

Actually, this cooler might be better than it seems. It looks similar to the BFG Thermointelligence cooler:

http://www.thermointelligence.com/

One of its disctinctive feature is that the outflow it towards the inside of the case, not the mounting bracket. BFG is only using it with 8600 Series cards, though. As for the similar model from XFX, much depends on how its made inside. See this review:

Pretty sure the internals of the 8800gt heatsink are all/mostly copper. So no, this heatsink should prove much worse (especially considering it's 1/2 the size).

I've had 2 XFX 8600GT video cards with that same heatsink/fan combo fail on me. They are noisy and crap IMO.

And gersson, that comment about Rollo is uncalled for. He can still contribute to the forums like anyone else.

I dont get gerrsons complaint either. Maybe calling the 8800gt a bargain card (since its MSRP is like $300)?

That said, Yeah I've got nothing against xfx... that $100 SLI board they've got looks damn nice to me. But, their cooling on their lower priced 8800 series cards leaves a lot to be desired. I have no clue why they chose to go with a cheaper heatsink than stock. It kind of screws their 8800gs (which otherwise would be a fantastic buy) and makes their 8800gt's undesirable since other brands have the stock cooler (which sucks but has to be better than this one) for ~the same price or even less.

That heatsink may be smaller but they have it running at a high speed at a sacrifice of noise. Personally I think they should have stuck with the OEM design, still loud for some people, but at the same time these versions cost 20$ cheaper than the other models XFX offers (before the mass 8800GT offload) that does use the OEM design.
Only thing you need to watch out for is they also use a different PCB layout also so cooling methods that work for stock 8800GT's may not work with that model (note this model only have 4 screws where as the stock as those 4 and another 4 on the outer edge).
As someone already mentioned these are considered budget cards. Still I wish many would jump on the MSI or EVGA bandwagon and offer a dual slot cooler.

Bravo. Just Bravo.

I could get that card for 10$ less than what mine cost. I don't have any preferance between eVGA, BFG Tech and XFX. Yet I chose BFG, because I saw that the XFX card had that cheap heatsink.

Wankers. :/

I know that the higher end models have better heatsinks but the middle of the line products get away with cheap heatsinks that seem to fail at keeping the card at a reasonable temperature. Far Cry use to heat the card up too much, I would have to minimize every few minutes to let it cool down.

This is my experience with XFX heatsinks, but I'm not saying they are a bad company overall, I just think eVGA is a better choice.

My Sapphire single slot HD3870 has a crappy hs/fan that actuall blows into my case. Good thing I have a Thermaltake Armour case with a massive 25CM fan on the side.

At first I read that post and thought... that's not that massive. Then I realized you didn't forget the F.

Reminds me of my old 550cfm caravel mod.

If you're trying to say I don't buy video cards, I do. I get a lot of them free, but I probably buy as many as most people as well.

The $619 invoice is the XFX 9800GX2 in my box right now

(SLi'd with a reference 9800GX2)

One of the major reasons why I've chosen the GTS over the GT is the 2-slot cooler the GTS has. I always prefer to be on the safe side when it comes to cooling especially after having lost a couple of cards because of poor cooling solutions.

I've always considered XFX as one of the good OEMs but that cooler really sucks. As Zap mentioned and as many reviewers at newegg did also, that thing is too noisy and IMHO not to be trusted.

I think that this thermointelligence is pure marketing crap. Yes, lets put the stock cooler to exhaust the hot air inside the case and there you have a more efficient cooler. :( WTF??

Just engineer another cooler you lazy BFG bastards and not just another sticker!!!

Honestly, I buy based on quality of individual product, not based on company rep. XFX has a good rep, they generally make quality products, but that cooler is downright atrocious.

eVGA also has managed to release very poor products in the past. None the less they and XFX are a first tier manufacturer, that is, they make the high end quality stuff. BFG too but BFG has always been too expensive for my taste.

For the GT the MSI aftermarket card wins, it is the best of all, it is made by a respectable company (unlike the ECS version which probably has exploding capacitors), it has a REAL cooler (the reference cooler for the GT is inadequate), and it is cheap! what more can one ask for?

I use a 8800GTS from XFX. Reference cooler. and I can sell it WITH a warranty to someone before buying a G200 thanks to their double lifetime warranty.

I just see this type of card as a good deal for someone looking to replace the cooler w/ an S1 / S2 and just use after market cooling and still keep their warrenty.
