Wow, X-Fi is amazing

I used to have X-Fi's attached to these Logitech Z-5500's, now I use integrated sound, man what a diffrence. With the X-Fi, the sound was great, packed more of a punch and was a lot louder, these speakers aren't deafening without the X-Fi anymore.

That's unfortunate😉. Where has said X-fi gone by the way?

When I got rid of my old computer I left it in there. I could probobly pick one up for $80, and I might do that. What a diffrence though.

There have been some $60 deals lately.

What is your integrated sound? I'm curious because I'm pondering whether to change to a sound card or just keep using my current onboard. I only have logitech z-2200's tho so the difference probably wouldn't be as noticeable.

The benefit of the xi-fi isn't that it's louder. It's it's processing power and low noise dacs. If you onboard sound is too quiet, you're just not turning it up.

I think before anyone invests in an X-Fi, they should read up on it in the Creative forums. There are definite incompatabiilities andanomalous crackles that appear in a certain percent of the boards. There is a known issue with NF4 boards, Most people don't have that issue ( but I do, and it is the post-updated version and I am not running NF4).

Mine has worked fine both on A8N board and lately on some older crappy SIS-based board.
As for NF4 board it is not exaclty great for handling sound samples - even with a dedicated sound card. Anyway professionals do not recommend this board. See this link: http://www.rme-audio.com/english/techinfo/nforce4_tests.htm But with updated bios it worked fine for me.
No way I ever go back to onboard.

Going from a Live! 24bit to an X-Fi, would it be worth the investment?

Yes - if used for games.
Music - not really.

I'd say just for music you would have to have very good speakers and probably X-Fi Pro to hear any difference compared to your Live 24 bit.

If anyone upgraded this way and has different opinion please correct me.

I went from onboard to just an Audigy 2 value, and my Logitech Z-2200's are a totally different speaker set.
Integrated/onboard sound still sucks to this day; I don't care how everyone claims its coming along and progressing.

Don't believe teh hype. They're excellent in so much as they will allow SLIGHTLY better sound quality sounds, as well as complex ones for games. They have an OK sound:noise ratio which is a plus...except they sometimes pop click anyway 😛
As far as music goes, it has 2 DSPs: A surround feature and the Crystalizer -- a glorified compression + treble, bass booster.
For Recording, the ASIO drivers work really well with Adobe Audition 2

EMU top of the line+excellent reference 2.0 speakers=awesome.

Again, I agree but only for games.

With movies, I had to turn up the sound almost all the way to hear it, whereas wih the X-Fi, 1/2 way is too loud.

its all what it sounds like to you in the end.

let me tell you coming from AC97 to an x-fi was night and day.

too bad you cant try these out before, otherwise i would have bought one the day it came out.

Indeed, look closely. On my P4 875 IC7 mobo I had a problem after swapping out my Audigy 1 for an X-Fi. Kept telling me "not enough resources", crazy to see that error on a system with 1GB RAM, no IRQ conflicts or anything else....and this was a straight swap, no other changes made to the system. After a lot of fiddling, I fixed the problem by changing my AGP aperature from 128MB to 256MB. WHAT THE HELL? I have a 6800 Ultra, what does sound have to do with AGP?

I don't see what's so flattering about dynamic range compression. You probably need better speakers.

I have had every single version of the Sound blaster series at one point or another. Biggest differences (not mentioning everycard, just ones I saw a difference upgrading to)I saw was between the first SB to the SBPro, SBPro to Awe64 Gold, Awe64 Gold to SBLive 5.1, SBLive 5.1 to Augigy 2 ZS (still my favorite card BTW). But other that the cool 3DVirtual headphone funtion I find the X-Fi equal or maybe even lesser audio quality than the Audigy 2 ZS. I always hated all the BS bloatware with basically all SB cards but the SW for the 2 ZS was actually of high quality. The Audio creation mode on the X-Fi is horrible as I had mention all over this forum. The Digital delay is pathetic. The delay was MUCH longer and better on the ZS. But the X-fi is still a decent card.

i have an audigy 2 zs and i have to turn up the the sound settings and the speakers to almost max to get decent sound.

I was in love with my X-Fi until I realized there's no Linux support for the god damned thing whatsoever.

i use the onboard sound on my asus p5w dh deluxe and it sounds damn awesome hooked up to our home theater speakers (7.1 by snell).

im loving how our case also has the HD/azalia output for the front jacks too...🙂

Are you using the digital output from it or analog?

I have an X-Fi Xtreme Music that I bought in 12/05 that I don't need anymore. Still have the original box, minus the UPC (sent in for a rebate). If anybody is interested, shoot me a PM. Perhaps I should go to the buy/sell/trade forum. Oh cool, I just noticed that in 5 more posts my post count will be 1337

Heh, there's barely Windows support for it, what makes you think there will be Linux support? 😛
