Wow, with the new socket 939 motherboards out, AMD excels at encoding and everything else!

In terms of their current pipeline of CPU's, yes. According to sales, no. Noboby knows jack about AMD in the world outside of Anandtech.com.

Thats not entirely true. Last time I went to Best Buy THe only computer systems I saw being boughten both had AMD XP's in them. They also had AMD motherboards and Retail CPU's in stock even. I was shocked. I think the tides are slowly starting to turn for AMD. People may still not know what they are but regular Joe Shmo is starting to buy AMD stuff which will help them in the long run.

It actually is [starting to change].

I work in retail, & while there are still many people who will refuse to even consider anything but an Intel, i'm guessing our store sells at least a 2:1 ratio of AMD XP PCs vs. P4s 😀.

The reason?
You can buy a P4 system, or a comparable AMD XP system for about $200-300 Cdn. less.

Money speaks very loudly.

O_O, lol. Good news.

It's going to be painful to rip apart my system again just so I can install a socket 939 mobo with a 90nm CPU. But I'm hoping that won't be until well into next year.

Yadda, Yadda, Yadda.......................AMD takes the lead.................Intel takes it from them...............Amd takes it back...................Intel gets it back from them...................who the hell cares as long as competition keeps them both moving things faster and better as well as cheaper.....................

If I was a Intel fanboy, I guess I would say the same thing 😉🙂

Haha Intel = Pwned...
They need to quit resting on thier butts and get out a 64 chip and a better bargain chip then the celerons.. to compete with AMD.

If you own an A64, the rules stipulate you can no longer be apart of the Intel fan club. 🙂

IMO AMD is kinda stupid not to lower thier prices by about 20% on these 939's when Intel is sorta down right now...

So what a 2.4 939 newcastle can beat a 3.4 presscot/northwood by 10% the surcharge simply is'nt worth it to 99% of the people.

$420 vs $690

Especially for the small/obsure company AMD is for most people.

I don't think Intel will really be competative until their Dothan type cores make it to the desktop... or if the Prescott suddenly scales incredibly well, which is as unlikely as Bill Gates is to lower the price of Windows.

well, i hear that hte price of windows is so high is because of people who bootleg the os. because of the large loss of money, the increase the price of the os so that large corporations and businesses HAVE to spend that amount of money on the os if they really need it. this is how they get their money back from loss. as for cpu's, i dont htink people can bootleg it! 😛

No.

The price of Winblowz is so high because Microsoft is retarded.

Hopefully Linux will become popular enough that Microsoft has to lower to their prices to keep customers.

The reason it's so expensive for Windows is because right now, they really have no competition.

Exactly. Intel just posted huge gains in net, AMD may be faster, but Intel has the big budget contracts with companies like dell. Ah well, I'll continue to buy AMD so long as they are around, and keep the price/performance crown.
