I thought Win2k had decent performance with my 128MB of RAM, but I just stuck another 128MB in there and I am amazed at the performance. Image editing is especially smooth. Too bad I only have this ram temporarily... :(

My system takes a while to boot too. That's what you get when you have an all SCSI system. :p
It's going to be hard to give this RAM back. :p

My system is all SCSI also and take about 60 seconds to boot (including logging in, running logon script, etc. -- time from power button to desktop without hour glass) :)

Athlon 800
256 MB PC133 CAS2
Cheetah 18XL
100BTX NIC
etc.

Hmmm...how do you pull that off? It takes time for the SCSI card to scan the BUS...takes longer than it takes Win2k to boot

Only takes my SCSI card about 15 seconds to scan the bus. It's an adaptec 2940U2W

Now here's the good news.

M$ Windows 2005 with 1GIG ram will run as fast as Win2k with 256MB ram.

(Ram) Size does matter.

Wizkid, how many devices do you have hooked up? I have four and it's mostly my plextor that brings the boot time way down, it takes it a long time to initialize or whatever. I've never actually timed my bootup but it seems like a lot more than 60 seconds...

Lucky bastard! My 6 new Dell Poweredge 2450 servers with dual P!!!600EB with 1 GB of ram take about 3-4 minutes to boot up each at work. On one its especially long, but thats because it has a powervault 120 robotic tape drive with 7 tape slots and a powervault 210s RAID array with 12 Ultra 160 18Gb IBM drives hooked up to it along with its standard internal 4 Ultra 160 9GB quantums. That machine has 5 scsi buses. Two internal on the Perc 3 si (with 128mb RAM) 2 external on the Perc 2 dc for the raid array (64mb RAM) and 1 external differential for the tape box.

hehe--I love my job! :):)

5 SCSI busses? Wow, that would allow for 75 devices (assuming they're all newer cards). Seems a bit overkill. :)

There's no way that 4GB ram will be under $100 in 5 years, maybe in 15-20 years if not longer. Actually, ram price is twice as expensive as it was one year ago. I could buy 64MB ram for $25 this time last year. Now it costs $60-$70. :)

I suppose any operating system will have a great performance with 256MB of RAM (especially Linux). But what about running Win2k with 32MB of RAM?Even Windows 3.x should be faster.

With 256MB ram, you can boot and run win95 right off a ram drive. That's going to be lightning fast even for a M$ OS. :)

The 5 scsi busses on my servers are not overkill, since the 3 scsi controllers are all different, and are needed to control all the various devices.
