1 1/2 hours to download and update the system for first use?!! WTF is that? Get the kids all excited then go thru this? It is now being returned. Buyer beware. I don't care how "cool" the games will be. Companies need to get a clue.....

BTW: I have a 26mb connection so its not the connection...............

From things I read, it is a 4-5GB update. Best guess people can make is, Nintendo didn't put it on the system either because it wasn't ready or to leave that amount of space free on peoples system and only the ones who go online with it would need it.

You're returning it because having to wait 1.5 hours upset your kids? What about their dad returning the new console the same day he got it?

Updates? Get used to it, it's part of the console model now. No more plug-in and play, like old cart-based consoles.

Well you wouldn't expect him to teach his children patience would you?

I don't know why it would bonk a system, unless the console went down in the middle of installing it. Are we getting made-up stories from folks now?

Surely it won't be that long in the future. Still, 1.5 hours up front is absurd.

It show's laziness on Nintendo's part. Hopefully they will have this crap fixed before Christmas, for the own sake.

1.5 hours? That's a medium poop session for me when I get cooking on my phone, just boot up the Wii and let it do its thing. Whats the big deal?

I knew before hand this was gonna happen. So I put it for updating while I was watching college basketball, by the time the game was done, the update was installed and ready to go. I really like how you can switch the input on your tv and still watch the progress on the tablet. Also was a blast to switch between the tv and the tablet screen. Its a gimmick, but in netflix it was very impressive!!

OP's being a little dramatic. You can still play games, you just can't go online until you download it.

I was going to get one, had a deluxe bought on Craigslist for $50 over retail and backed out after seeing how horid the response time of the UI and the limited ram the system has and slow clock speed.

Apparently, someone hasn't bought a console in the past almost decade.

To be fair, the 360 updates don't take very long at all. The PS3 though used to take forever and they would release updates all the time.
